John and Peg, Woodstock, IL Dear J. & P.: It is very rare that one buys the exact amount of paint needed for the job. It's always better to have a little extra for touch up than not enough. The formula for figuring how much paint you will need may seem confusing at first glance, but actually it's very simple, and once mastered, you will never forget it. First, multiply the width times the height of all four walls. Second, multiply the length and width of the ceiling. Add these figures together then divide by three to get the total area in square yards. Third, check the paint chart below to see how many square yards one gallon of paint covers. Fourth, divide thirfiumber into the number of square yards in the room. This gives you the number of gallons you need to paint the room. • Example: A room is 9 feet by 11 feet with an 8 foot ceiling. The paint is a flat latex. Look at the paint chart. One gallon of flat paint will cover approximately 96 square yards. 9' x 8'= 72' x 2-144 sq. ft.
