We thought it would be fun lo buy a "handyman's special" house, fix it up ourselves, and sell it for a profit. Peg does the wallpapering and I do the painting. Somehow I always buy more paint tban necessary, which can be costly. Can you give me a formula for determining paint quantities? John and Peg, Woodstock, IL Dear J. & P.: It is very rare that one buys the exact amount of paint needed for the job. It's always better to have a little extra for touch up than not enough. The formula for figuring how much paint you will need may seem confusing at first glance, but actually it's very simple, and once mastered, you will never forget it. First, multiply the width times the height of all four walls. Second, multiply the length and width of the ceiling. Add these figures together then divide by three to get the total area in square yards. Third, check the paint chart below to see how many square yards one gallon of paint covers. Fourth, divide thirfiumber into the number of square yards in the room. This gives you the number of gallons you need to paint the room. • Example: A room is 9 feet by 11 feet with an 8 foot ceiling. The paint is a flat latex. Look at the paint chart. One gallon of flat paint will cover approximately 96 square yards. 9' x 8'= 72' x 2-144 sq. ft. II* x 8' = 88* x 2= 176 sq. ft. 9' x II'-ceiling « 99 sq. ft. + 419 sq. ft. 139.66 sq. yards 3|419 1.43 or \ 'A gallons of paint %|319.66 Surfaces that are porous or textured will require more than one coat of paint. Here are some painting tips to make your job easier. • Remove all hardware (door knobs, hinges, switch plates, etc.) or cover them with plastic. • Drop ceiling fixtures before painting. • Remove all furniture. If not possible, move furniture to center of room and cover with an old sheet or plastic drop cloth. • Cover floors and passage ways with drop cloths. • To protect window panes and fixed mirrors, border with masking tape. • Fill all cracks and nail holes with plaster. Sand until smooth. • Wash walls. Paint applied to a dirty surface wiil peei and crack. • After painting windows, check to be sure ihev are not painted shut, i JATi NAUTILUS IS HERE!
