JriMskire's Mart DmmIIi Now Is Tho Tim* To B,,,. , , . IHIIi rrepsrf wim Professional IMp McHenry Marlins The McHenry Marlins had their one-meet winning streak broken at Mt. Prospect Jan. 19,251-186. The bitter cold prevented atten dance from a full McHenry squad. The Marlins next meet is at West Campus this Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m. One or more firsts were taken at Mt. Prospect by: Courtney Shanahan, Mary Wray, Craig Fowles, Tom Usrey, Eric Tucker, Matt Mohlman, Karen Panerelli, Emily Hutchins, Erin Shanahan, WRESTLERS (CnUn^mpMfW was our goal at the beginning, and it was a good goal to strive for." • THE SKYHAWKS HAVE various shots at individual championships in the tournament, and Roberts ran down each of the weight classes to see where his wrestlers fit in. r , Seedings will be decided Friday night, Roberts said. The Skyhawks will have no entries at 98 and 105 pounds. At li2, junior Ed Klein will take his 2-3 conference record into the meet. "Ed could give some people some trouble," Roberts said. At 119, senior Terry Eifler totes a nifty 20-7 overall record and 5-1 con ference mark. "He'll probably be seeded second," Roberts predicted. "Terry's definitely our most improved wrestler from a year ago. He's really finished strong." At 126, Johnsburg will be represented by its second-best wrestler, percentage-wise, Jim Walker. Walker goes into the meet with a sports 23-4 mark, 3-2 in the league. "PROBABLY A THIRD seed," Roberts said of Walker, who's only a sophmore, "but certainly capable of finishing first or second. He's been a bit of a surprise for us this season. We always knew he'd be an outstan ding wrestler, but 23-4, that's just overwhelming. Anyone who's seeded first or second had better watch out for Jim." Junior David Thoren (132) has a 3-1-1 record in the circuit, 18-8-2 overall. "He's been wrestling very, very well of late," Roberts said. "I expect a second or third seed for him. He'll be a 20-match winner for us this year." At 138, junior Shaun Kee is 12-12-1 for the year, and 2-4 in the con ference. "Shaun's been excellent lately," Roberts said. "The likelihood of him being seeded is pretty slim, but he's the type of individual who can upset someone. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him place Saturday." Junior Brian Hauck is 11-11-2 at 145, and 2-2 in the NWSC. Hauck suf fered from walking pneumonia early in the campaign, but has been the Skyhawks' most consistent wrestler over the past two weeks, according to Roberts. "HE'S WRESTLING real well right now," said Roberts. "He's 7-3-1 in January, so he's really improving. Brian's just been super lately." Roberts is unsure of Johnsburg's status at 155 lbs., due to two of his wrestlers at that weight missing school. "We may go without one," he said. ' The winningest Skyhawk is at 167 pounds. Senior and team leader Mark Dumelle is 25-5-1 and 6-1 in the league. His only NWSC loss came Friday to Round Lake's Marcos Jaime, who will probably be seeded ahead of him, according to Roberts. "Jaime's also certified at 155, so he may wrestle there. But if he's at 167, Mark will be second. I really can't say enough about Mark. He's been our captain and our leader all year. The only four-year wrestler in } the program, just a great all-around athlete and leader." j-' " Pat Bjerning is an even .500 at 185,15-15, and 3-4 in1 the conference. Bjerning, a junior, has done a good job in a tough weight class, Roberts noted. ' HEAVYWEIGHT BOB BENTZ has the best winning percentage on the JHS squad, his record a sparkling 24-3-1. Bentz is also a perfect 7-0 in the league. Bentz didn't compete against Grant's heavyweight in the two teams' dual meeting, but the Bulldogs will send their varsity heavyweight Saturday. "I'm real happy to see that. If Bob wins, he won't have to take a back seat to anyone. He can be the champion, like his brother was last year." Jim Bentz remains the only conference champion Johnsburg has ever had, a feat his brother hopes to equal Saturday. "IT'S A GOAL for Bob, within the family too. He's really geared up. The past couple of weeks, he's just been an animal. He's gained a lot of confidence. He's ready to go," added Roberts. Roberts admitted he's also prepared for the 'event.' "It's only Wednesday, and I'm already getting antsy," he said. "We know it would be tough for us to win, it's almost impossible because Grant and Round Lake are so, so good. It's an individual thing. Everybody wants to do well in his weight category. But in the back of our minds, we don't want the team to fall lower than third. "We'd really be dreaming to think we could win it all. But so much as we don't think we can, who really knows? But third place? Third place would be super." Warrior athletics still on hold To be brief and perfectly concise, McHenry High School athletic contests for the weekend are postponed, inlimbo and definitely on. First, Thursday's events: The boys' swimming meet against CL Central was put off, as was the girls' basketball game at Dundee- Crown. 4 The state of Friday night's boys' basketball game against CL "Cen tral was in limbo at press time Thursday morning. Athletic director Joe Schlender said the game could be played Friday, Saturday or at alaterdate. Saturday's Fox Valley Conference wrestling meet at Woodstock will definitely have McHenry involvement, according to Schlender. "We'd like for all the teams to get in at least one day of practice with the coaches, so as for the Friday basketball game, we're not sure yet," Schlender said Thursday morning. "But it sure is great to be back," he added.
