FEBRUARY 1,1983 Sports McHenry pair lead MCC wrestling squad KNcwiSvyIci r CRYSTAL LAKE - Two former McHenry High School wrestlers and two other erap- plers from Woodstock nave paced McHenry. County College's wrestling team to a 1- M reoord as the Fighting Scots for the Skyway Con- meet next week. Rick Connors and Mike Love of McHenry have joined Rich Drabek and Dave Burmeister, members of last year's Wood stock team that captured third place in the IHSA state meet, to form MCC's small, but com petitive, squad. "We've done real well. We've .won 31 matches and lost only 12, County, 18-18, but we've had to forfeit so many matches because of our smau team," MCC Coach Steve Patton said. Through MCC's most recent match, Drabek has a 10-1 record wrestling at 167 pounds and 177 pounds, Burmeister is 8-2 while wrestling at 190 and heavyweight, Love is 7-3 at 112 and Corners is 5-5 at 134. Last Wendesday, MCC defeated a Truman team that also had only four wrestlers. Drabek pinned his 410-pound opponent while Burmeister (who weighs 195 pounds) also defeated his 240pound foe. The Scots lost to Wright, 31-18, and tied the College of Lake in their other two matches. In the loss to Wright, all four MCC wrestlers won, but the Scots had to forfeit matches at 118,126,150,158, 167 and 190. Against Lake County, Love and Connors were winners by decision while Burmeister posted a first-period pin. "Dave is pushed up to wrestle the heavyweights and he does a great job using his quickness against the bigger guys," Patton said. "Rich is by far the best wrestler on the team. He's so intense - that's Nwhat wins matches for him." During last weekend's Harper Junior College Invitational, Drabek placed second in the 167- pound class, Burmeister was second at heavyweight, Connors second at 134 and Love was third at 142. The Scots will participate in their final meet of the year Feb. 6 when they travel to Grayslake (College of Lake County) for the conference meet. "Right now, if we had three more guys on the team to wrestle we could probably win the whole thing," Patton said. "It's a numbers game. Everyone's down in numbers. All we'd need to do is fill the roster and we could probably win it." Patton said any student in terested in wrestling in the Feb. 6 meet should contact Athletic Director Dave Hill at (815) 455- 3700. MCC women eager s bested by Truman, 72-63 I News Service McHenry County sen's basketball CHICAGO- College's women team erased a 14-point halftime deficit to tie the score, but had shooting problems in the final 10 minutes of the game as Truman edged the Scots, 72-63, in a Skyway Conference battle of the second-place teams Tuesday night. "We knew their (Truman's) plays. We knew their patterns. We just refused to play the overplay defense we worked on," MCC coach Bob Edwards said. "Offensively, we had trouble sticking to our patterned offense. I think our players are losing confidence in that offense. Once that confidence is gone, the offense will never work." That, combined with 14 first- half turnovers, allowed Truman to jump to a double-digit lead midway through the first half. But a harsh halftime talk by Edwards seemed to bring the Scots out of their lethargic play. "I told them we could still win the game," Edwards recalled of his halftime lecture. "I told them we either go out and play the defense like we needed to and take our shots when they were available on the offensive end, or we could pack our duffle bags and head home. I was glad to see how they responded." flow they responded would please any coach. The Scots tallied the first 12 points of the second half and, in the process, turned in a sparkling defensive effort that held Truman scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second BOYS 4Continued from page 20) the ball to go to Andy," Marian Central Coach Hans Rokus said. "Sixteen-of-22 is why he's the we want at the free throw After missing his first two tries from the line, the senior swingman canned ll-of-12 in the second quarter. He scored 15 points of Marian's 15 second- quarter points as the Hurricanes turned a 12-12 first-quarter tie into a 29-23 halftime lead. While Hartlieb took over the scoring honors in the second quarter, it was Will's outside shooting that allowed Marian the luxury of running its offense in the opening eight The senior ' scored straight MC points four outside jumpers in the opening quarter to keep Marian in the contest. Will's outside marksmanship offset that of Johnsburg's Jeff Nichols, who also scored eight points in the opening quarter. "HE MADE some nice shots - some key shots that kept us in there in the first quarter," Rokus said. "Just when we needed one, he'd get it for us." . Marian's defense may not be remembered for anything special in the win, but a four- minute scoreless stretch in the second quarter was due mainly to MC's 2-3 zone. After a Nichols 20-footer tied the score at 20 with 5:07 left in the half, the Marian defense took over. Johnsburg had trouble adjusting to the scrappy zone and didn't notch another hoop until Bill Dust's 15-footer with 1:09 remaining in the quarter. By then, Marian had a 29-22 lead as Hartlieb hit seven of eight free throws and added a 20- footer of his own. Each time JHS rallied in the bt minutes. third auaster. Marian answered cored™ht SS nm^pS^to as he swished maintain a five- to seven-point lead. A pair of Tom Walsh 12- footers brought the Skyhawks to within 31-27, but Will's 14-footer and a rebound layup by Brian Truckenbrod upped the lead to 35-27. LATER IN the quarter, Johnsburg got to within 37-33, but freshman Jim Hartlieb's three-point play repadded the lead to seven. Johnsburg's defense forced Marian into several bad shots and a handful of turnovers as the half. "Truman then became frustrated. They started throwing the ball out of bounds like we did in the first half," Edwards said. MCC pulled to within 38-36 midway through the second half, "but then we stopped doing what got us back in the game - playing defense. Hie loss drops the Scots to 4-2 in conference play while Truman is 5-1. Elgin leads the league with a 6-0 mark. Hawks got as close as 4844, but Will's 15-footer send fast break layup off a pass from Andy Hartlieb gave the 'Canes a 52-44 It Hawks closed the gap to four points in the waning seconds, but committed a foul out Of bounds tor a two-shot technical. Hartlieb's two free throws with :02 to play provided the final margin. "I thought we plugged up the middle fairly well," Rokus said of his team's defense. "Nichols got his shots, but he's a good ball player. He's going to hit those on you. During that four- or five- minute stretch , in the second quarter we did a nice job. Diey were stuck on 20 for quite a while. That gave us some breathing room. "It was just nice to get back home (after three road games) and play on our own floor with a little confidence," he added. "Everyone now knows their role and they all contributed in that way." Nichols and Tim Shine paced Johnsburg in the scoring category with 17 and 15 points, respectively while Dust chipped in nine.
