FEBRUARY 1.1985 Area residents owed IKS refund checks Embark on community outreach program The Internal Revenue Service is trying to locate some area residents who are due a refund from their 1983 federal income tax returns. Among them are: Martin Fredericks, Marty J. Fredericks, William P. Ogor- man, Donna Stull, and Diana L. Wessels all of McHenry; and Robert Alan Legraff of Burton's Bridge. According to J.R. Starkey, IRS district director for nor thern Illinois 4,061 refund checks worth $1,887,516 were returned by the Postal Service as un- deliverable in the area. Most of the refund checks are from 1983 returns; however, 768 of them are from prior years. Over 200 taxpayers have refund checks in excess of $1,000 waiting to be claimed, including 18 who have checks over $5,000. The largest refund check is for $60,794. The refund checks are for in dividuals only. Starkey noted that the tax payers may have moved or changed their last names during the year and failed to notify the IRS, or the handwriting may simply be illegible. When a refund is returned by* the Postal Service, the IRS attempts to find the taxpayer and deliver the checks, but there are always some who cannot be found. Taxpayers who think they may be due a tax refund for 1983 or an earlier year should contact the IRS. Northern Illinois taxpayers should call toll-free 1-800-424- 1040 to claim their refund.
