O I L P R I C E P E P B A R R E L Page 2 -PLA1NDEALER-HERALD, FRIDAY,FEBRUARY 1,1985 Opinion/Politics i Little creatures show, ; things not what they seem t i IN THIS MOST BITTER weather of winter, the hearts of all hut ; the most callous individual are with those humas exposed to the ; elements. ; In the sub-zero cold it didnt matter much whether the street ; people of the large cities were homeless because of misfortune or • their own neglect. They were fellow humans suffering as no one ; should do when relief is possible. ' Fewer are concerned with the plight of our animal friends, j which with few exceptions, has nothing to do with the situation in ; which they find themselves. usin' &, landerin j i Regular callers at our doorstep since early autumn have been ' two kitties. At first we ignored their apparent pleas for food, but ! it soon became evident that if it was not forthcoming they would I i not eat. \ j EXTREME COLD BROUGHT a wooden box to our front step, < which is an eyesore. But it's protected from the wind and well I covered outside and within, ft can hardly be considered cosy !; from any viewpoint when the thermometer dips below zero, but it , i is better than no protection at all. ! The friendlier of the two cats appeared delighted with an in- !1 vitation into an enclosed and partially heated porch. She took up S a comfortable residence on the couch, ate what was offered and I; acted very much the lady. * It was a boring existence but she waited out the cold spell in »; comfort. ; Who owns these cats and why are they roaming about? If they |; accept what little hospitality we have extended to them, isn't it ' reasonable to assume they would do the same if offered at home? j THIS IS THE TIME of year when many of us contribute to the I duck canisters, which is the only way to assist the winter feeding i program. It is the time of year also when we can only wonder ! about the feelings of trappers whose catches are held in torture I through t the use of steel jaw, leghold traps which should have * been banned with the pillory of old. < r But out of these somber thoughts there has come to us one of , the funniest stories we have heard. It is a true one involving some ; of the lowliest of earth's creatures. J; A young former McHenry lady and a friend had purchased live 1 [ crickets to feed an exotic bird owned by the latter. To kecqp them '6 alive, which is a requisite for this particular bird, the seller j; carefully wrapped them and placed them in a pouch-like con- - tainer. I: FROM THE STORE, the ladies wen to a fast fdod restaurant, 5 where they realized they hbd inadvertantly left their purchase in * I a cold car. Bringing the pouch into the restaurant, an in- ,; vestigation followed which revealed that the worst of their fears 5. had been realized. The crickets appeared to have died. jj> Placing the inert bodies back in the pouch, they departed, jj; Hardly had they taken to the highway when the light 2 on a a police car brought them to a halt. $ "I WASN'T SPEEDING,*' was the assurance given by the ̂ incredulous driver. Her words fell on deaf ears as the officer I asked her to produce identification by wayof her driver's ltoenfce.S J When this met his satisfaction, he asked to look at the pouch he $ had seen her open in the restaurant. Aha, would he be knighted, £ or at least get a small promotion for a drug bust? t. "Curses," he must have echoed the villain of old when he opened the pouch to find no cocaine, only a bunch of frozen ;• crickets. The officer was still wearing red cheeks as he shamefacedly ;; sent the young women on their way. PUMP-DROP ANPNO CHEATING! HOLDOUT FOR OUR PRICE! GOOD REASONS FOR JOINING McHENRY NAUTILUS.
