For if their beloved Bruins' record was imper fect. In all likelihood the blemish had been sus tained earlier in the year in South Bend. NBC college basketball analyst Al McGuire missed most of those Bruin/Irish encounters, busy as he was coaching his Marquette Warriors. The seven losses his 1977 national champion ship squad suffered before tournament time Exceeded the combined, loss total of. the-.threk previous champs -- N.C. State. UCLA and Indiana -- by six. To have timed his team's peak so perfectly was inspirational; to have ushered in the age of parity was incidental. I "I think dynasties are an asset to sports," says McGuire. not sounding anything like a Brooklyn native. "We have to hav* idols and we have to have the have-nots going after them. But it's gotten hard to run a dynasty. Look at UCLA. They Won't recover for another decade. "Changing coaches has been their main problem." continues McGuire. "They've had five coaches in less than 10 years since Coach Wooden retired. I don't think the players ever knew who they were play ing for." Known and revered for his spontaneous contribu tions to hoop lexicography r- for example, penetrating guards, arb "Pi" Boats" -- McGuire attributes his vocabulary "to a lack of vocabulary;" But., he believes his continual bouncing about of ideas/ intended to improve the college game, emanates from a desire to keep pace_ with television's voracious' appetite for the new. His latest proposal is aimed at lessening the need for coaches --- most of whom. McGuire says, "did not go into coaching to become a corporation or own a mansion" -- to cheat and instill into their programs a must-win-lor- air time attitude. "The NCAA should take all bowl money from foot ball and tournament money from basketball." McGuire suggests, "and split it between all Division I schools./There's 282 of them. They should all get an equal share. If the Xaviers and Central Michi- gans knew they were in for. say. $60,000. they'd feel they had a chance. As It is, for Georgetown to get pub licity and then TV exposure and then another half mil lion (tor making the Final Four), we're just making the rich rlfcher." ©tMSCemputog I limy MWor HU fa4H in k>v* with a bcoutiful bal terino and dwMN of boilers.
