(U Now* 17 TMtfMBHes Julia Louis-Dreyfus of "Saturday Night Live" By Wendy Wallace It's been 10 years since "Saturday Night Live" first burst upon America's consciousness. Today, several for­ mer cast members are huge stars, including Eddie Murphy and Bitt Murray. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, a third-year member of the current cast, is satisfied to be among such talented company. But she is dissatisfied by the focus of attention given to the show's female stars. "There are three women in the cast." she says. "In some ways it's limiting in that with the men, you're competing for parts. For the women, it's easi­ er to know who can play what, because everyone is very different as far as their own skills. "It can be also be limiting just because it's so male- oriented," Miss Louis-Dreyfuss continues. "I think it's not just with this show but with comedies in general -- it's very male-oriented. There are not enough female writers on the staff so you would think that with as few as three women there would be a lot of material to do. but that's not often the case. That's because they think more in terms of the men. I think that's because it's a male-orient­ ed staff -- and they run the show." Miss Louis-Dreyfus was discovered while performing with an improvisations! troupe in Chicago by producer Dick Ebersol. "We were all very close friends which was a big help. I think it's apparent on stage too." Miss Louis- Dryefuss recalls. "We worked together and did things together all the time. I think they saw that camaraderie, a real ensemble feeling. We were having a fun time." She hopes that same kind of togetherness has been reflected over the years. The exposure has helped too. "I'd like to think of my stint on the show as a stepping- stone. I want to move on from here and try other forms of entertemment. I'd Nke to work in films, get back on the stage. So certainly it is a stepping-stone or a high point. I hope one of many high points. It certainly has been a great learning experience if nothing else. It's been a great opportunity to meet people that I've admired aN my life.
