WEDNESDAY, FEBRL'AR) 13,19S& Although the weather for the last two McHenry County Defenders recycling drives has been record-breaking cold and wind, the recycling workers have been there ready to process the materials brought in. A Defender spokesihan expressed surprise at the number of people who brought in their materials in spite of the weather. When one person was asked, "What brings you out on such a terrible day?" she replied, "The Defenders did. I just knew you'd be here." Despite the weather, almost half the usual amount of paper was brought in-about five tons as compared with the normal 10 tons, the Defender spokesman reported. The Defenders encourage recyclers to continue saving materials and to bring them in as soon as the weather permits, and added, "It takes worse weather than we've had yet for the Defenders to cancel a drive." People are encouraged to call Lecture series begins tonight on nature areas The McHenry County Con servation District is hosting a lecture series on Natural Areas in Northeastern Illinois. The sessions will be held on Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the community room at the Woodstock Opera House. Seats are $10 for the series, or $3 for single sessions. Admission will be collected at the door. The dates and topics are as follows: On Feb. 13, "Wild- flowers on Film" by Joyce Perbix, freelance wildflower photographer; and "Ansel Adams: A Retrospective", by Polaroid Corporation. On Feb. 20, "Ranking Natural Areas" by Gerould Wilhelm of the Morton Arboretum. On March 6 "Native Plants in Human Design" by Anthony Tyznik of the Morton Arboretum. On March 13, "Small Mammals in Natural Areas" by Jim Garner, mammal program specialist for the Illinois Department of Conservation. After each session there will be an opportunity for question- and-answer exchange - -< "This will be an outstanding series for expert and non-expert alike", says John Shiel, manager of educational and interpretive services for the McHenry County Conservation District. Recycling drives are held in McHenry on the first and third Saturdays of the month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of McHenry Community High School, West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Rd. Helping with the drive on Feb. 16 will be the Cadet Girl Scout Troop 471 under the co- leadership of Marian Cairo and Sophie Pearson. Residents can participate by brining any of the following items to the drive: newspaper with no magazines or junk mail , included, glass containers with all metal and plastic removed, "tin" cans rinsed and flattened, used motor oil, aluminum scrap of all kinds, and brown paper bags and cardboard in managable bundles. There will be an aluminum buy-back program in effect at which all participants will be paid the current market price lor 100 percent aluminum cans. A bonus of 2 cents per pound is paid for crushed cans and another 2 cents per pound if the cans are in lots of more than 100 pounds. Another buy-back program is conducted on the second Thursday of each month (Feb. 14) in the parking area behind McHenry FS, 4004 W. Route 120. Access to the area is made via Borden Street. The program is open from 9 a.m. to noon, and aluminum cans and glass containers are accepted.
