(Nipper) Allen of Crystal Lake will be the new superintendent of the McHenry county poor farm. Allen was elected by the county board of supervisors in a spirited contest ^vnere twelve candidates were considered. Chairman Wright suggested that candidates not receiving a •vote on the first ballot be ited. He also suggested the low candidate on the _ ballots be eliminated |mtil one candidate received the majority of the 18 votes of the fcoard members. Gardner A. The beginning of the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday brought hundreds of faithful from this community to the ^Various churches for worship. TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 11, 1960) Voters in McHenry are being requested to vote Feb. 16 on the question of issuing bonds to improve the waterworks system of the city. Eleanor Locker of 300 W. Elm Street, McHenry, was named general chairman for the fourth annual County Art Fair at a recent meeting of last year's Art Fair committee. The Fair, which is sponsored every year by the woman's auxiliary of McHenry Hospital, is ten tatively scheduled for late June. Miss Carole Lynn Swanson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Swanson of Wonder Lake and a 1959 graduate of McHenry high school, has been named a recipient of a $200 nurse ven by the local Foreign Wars scholarship Veterans oi auxiliary. George Pedersen of McHenry and Mrs. Elmer Schneider of Woodstock have been named co- chairmen of the 1960 Heart Fund drive in McHenry county. . Seniors named to the "A" Honor Roll of McHenry High School were Karen Bailey, Juay Hans, Barbara Krickl, Joan > Lubinski, Barbara Skrentny, Dan Sompel and Carol Stritar. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Feb. 12, 1975) Guided strongly by recom mendations made by a 2-2 year Citizens' Planning committee for High School District 156, Supt. Richard Swantz last week outlined plans for a proposed new program of education. The includes a combination the more traditional method of teaching and the progressive flexible approach-all within one four-year nigh school operating in two buildings. Spirited races are promised in two of McHenry's four wards in the April 15 aldermanic election. In Ward 3 Raymond L. Smith, a former alderman in that ward, and Robert J. Mortell will seek election. In Ward 4, it will be Ronald H. Meurer and Walther E.I. Schaedel bidding for the favor of voters. There are no contests in Ward 1 where William J. Bolger seeks another term or Ward 2, where George L. Harker is the office holder. Barbara Krebs returned home recently from Santos, Brazil, where she had spent a year as a student under the American Field Service program. The American Legion Auxilliary, McHenry Unit No. 491, recently welcomed Baby Bethany Schaefer into its auxiliary. With her mem bership, the auxiliary an nounced that its unit had the distinction of having four itions in its organization, include the oaby; her Mrs. Robert (Susan) Schaefer; Mrs. William (Eleanor) Althoff, great grandmother; and Mrs. Harry (Ethel) Conway, grandmother.
