Library urges photographers to enter contest It is said actions speak louder than words. But can images convey the meaning of words? Photos can tell a story. Sometimes an insight that was invisible to the unaided eye can be gained from a photograph. Often a photo is more precise than the most eloquent, well- chosen words. Can one photograph the ex perience of reacting - or the meaning of reading in American life? That is the challenge presented by the American Library Association's National Library Week Photo Contest. "A Nation of Readers" is the theme of a photo contest sponsored by the McHenry Public Library. Local winners will be entered in a national contest sponsored by the ALA in cooperation with the Library of Congress. Categories and classes include black and white Trade Fair offers learning experience for entire family . * • • Plalndealer Herald News Service photo by Amy K. YSB receives funding to help troubled youth There's one place where the entire family would like to be on March 1, 2, and 3. That's Parkland School, for McHenry's Trade Fair. Between 5 p.m. on March 1 and ending at 5 p.m. on March 3, Trade Fair will present a panorama of distinguished persons, products, services, elements of industry, and op portunities for employment, investment, and enrichment of life. Included in the fair will be demonstrations, games, prizes, samples of foods and products. The Trade Fair committee has established a policy that children up to high school age must be accompanied by responsible adults. High school students will be admitted in dependently with proper high school ID cards. The 1985 Trade Fair will host over 130 business and organizations from in and around McHenry. Seminars and shows are included in a full schedule of events. Thousands of dollars worth of prizes, products, and samples will be awarded to the thousands of guests in the three day period. There will be no admission fee Providing comprehensive services to troubled youth of ficially became a local com munity responsibility recently. Gordon Johnson, director of the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), signed documents recently authorizing 50 local boards to allocate more than $5 million of DCFS funds annually to help runaways,* schooh truant*, dropouts and. teenagers who have had brushes with the law. The legislation authorized creation of local youth boards that would establish networks of youth services in their areas and control allocation of state funds. Locally, all of McHenry County area is designated as service area No. 34. The state funds coming into this area are controlled by a board headed by Judge Susan Fayette Hut chinson and the McHenry County Youth Service Bureau, Inc. Annually, the board receives about $70,000 in state grants. DOUG'S BARBER AND STYLING CENTER FROM A GOOD OLD FASHION HAIRCUT, TO THE LATEST STYLE. YOUR ONE STOP HAIR SHOP.
