Shay, McHenry resident and director of McHenry County Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, recently attended a five- day national fire safety con­ ference in Washington, D.C. Shay was one of approximately 600 participants at the national "Partnerships Against Fire" con­ ference. The goa) of the con­ ference was to foster community partnerships that will promote fire safety and lower fire losses across the country. The con­ ference, sponsored by the Federal Emergency Management Agen­ cy's U.S. Fire Administration and thp National Fire Academy, was held Jan. 30 to Feb. 3. The conference was attended by fire and emergency services and _ disaster agency managers and personnel; emergency medical personnel; members of service and community-based volunteer organizations; educators; private sector representatives; and federal, state and local govern­ ment officials. Main program presentations ranged rom "Give 'Em Love, Give 'Em Life, Give 'Em A Smoke Detector," by Louis T. Galante, commissioner of the Chicago Fire Department, to "Cities on Fire: The Earthquake Threat," by Christopher Arnold of Building Systems Development in San Mateo, Calif. There were also workshops covering a wide range of topics from residential sprinkler systems to the future of burn treatment. This year marked the reinstif'u- tion of the tradition of annual cAi- ferences, provided for in tjie Federal Fire Protection and Con­ trol Act of 1974, sponsored by tjie U.S. Fire Administration. Clyde A. Bragdon Jr..ad­ ministrator of the U.S. Fire Ad­ ministration, addressing the con­ ference attendees, said: "If we are to effectively continue the momentum toward achieving a fire safe America, we must ex­ pand our circle and embrace all segments of our communities. We must reach out to the decision­ makers and influence leaders in fire and emergency management; federal, state and local govern­ ment officials; the private sector; and, most of all, to our citizens themselves.. Through these dedicated and committed in­ terests, coalitions should emerge as effective and dynamic 'Part­ nerships Against Fire.'
