The play will finish its three-week theater run this weekend at the Woodstock Opera House. Cancer program to begin By Mike Pennock PlalndMtor Herald News S«rvtc« A budget for The Willows, a controversial residential facility for maladjusted youths planned in Wonder Lake, will be prepared and sent to the State Board of Education for ap proval. , "I think it should be a real asset to the community," Dennis Smith, executive director of the McHenry County Mental Health Board, said of the project at last week's meeting of the board. The Willows school is designed to help youths ages 11-21 who have emotional problems that interfere with school, family and social functioning. It is to be funded mostly from local school districts through a purchase care program. The program is expected to help youths in five areas specified by the mental health board's Three Year Plan: a residential treatment setting for adolescents; a transitional day program for adolescents not in need of a 24-hour program; increased use of family therapy and parenting education for mentally-ill youths; career counseling for mentally-ill youths; and foster care. The Willows project, planned for a site on Thompson Road, ran into heated opposition last fall from some residents of Wonder Lake who expressed concern that the facility would have an adverse effect on property values and would bring undesirable juveniles into the community. Dr. Candice' Chorjel, executive director of the Willows, met with the Wonder Lake residents and gave examples of other comparable facilities that had no effect on property values. She also said students at the facility would be non-violent and youths with chemical dependancy problems would not be ad mitted. ^ > The McHenry County Zoning Board of Appeals, which recommended the program to the county board, also stipulated that a fence be built around the site. In other action: \ - To be more closely associated with its affiliates, the mental health board plans to hold joint meetings with nine agencies for which it provides funding, starting March 13 with Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County. The Crystal Lake Ambutal's "I Can Cope" cancer program, an education course for persons with cancer and their families, begins Monday, March 4. The course will meet every Monday for six consecutive weeks from 7 to 8:30 p.m., in the Ambutal's community room. "I Can Cope" offers par ticipants an opportunity to learn more about cancer, its treat ments, daily health problems, exercise and relaxation, and available resources. The program also helps participants learn to deal with expressing their feelings about having cancer. The course is conducted by Laura Kobza, RN, Sherman Hospital Oncology clinical specialist, and Rev. Robert Blake, Sherman Hospital chaplain. There is no charge for the program.
