Marian's Powers reaches state wrestling finals Sports log Jr. Youth registration The McHenry Junior Youth Baseball League will be holding its se­ cond day of registration for the 1985 season on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the McHenry VFW. Fees for participating in the league are $30 for a single child, $50 for two children, and $60 for three or more children. Registration will begin at noon both days, and end at 4 p.m. McHenry Pigtail League The McHenry Pigtail League has announced registration dates for the 1985 summer instructional softball program for girls ages eight- 17 The second day of registration will be held at McHenry Jr. High School on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All girls must be between the ages of eight and 17 before Dec. 1. The league's board of directors has established the following fee schedule: One girl -- $17; two girls per family -- $27; three girls per family -- $30. Payment must be made at the time of registration. There are three divisions in the league, ages 8-10 -- junior; ages 11- 13 - senior; ages 14-17 -- pony. PLANO - Rich Powers said he was a little nervous entering wrestling action Saturday at the Piano Sectional. But the way the Marian Central sophomore wrestled, it might be his future opponents who are trembling. Powers became only the second Hurricane grappler to qualify for the Illinois High School Association state wrestling meet, by virtue of his second-place finish at the sec­ tional. Only 1983 graduate Mark Wohnrade achieved that feat. 4 'I'm nervous about it already," Powers said Monday. "I've been thinking about it all weekend." The MC grappler, who im­ proved his recon) to 32-3, won his opening two matches in impressive fashion before losing in the finals to the second-place finisher in last year's state meet - Lisle's Bob Klausner, who is undefeated with 35 wins. "He was a little tentative on his feet at first, but whenever you wrestle a kid that good, you have to be a little ap­ prehensive," Marian Central Coach Mike Garvey said. "Overall, he did a nice job pt wrestling, but most importantly, he knows if he gets another shot at Klausner, he thinks he can beat him." Powers needed just 1:50 to pin his first-round opponent, Lloyd Davidson, Yorkville. Powers scored a takedown early in the match and was in control the entire way. In the semifinals, he trounced Dean Schafer (29-8 coming into the match) by a 14-3 count. Powers jumped to a 7-0 lead after the first period "and controlled him the whole time," Garvey said. "You can tell by looking at a guy's record how good he is," Powers said when asked how he approaches unknown opponent. "I use the first few minutes of a match to see what his weaknesses are, and then I go after them." Marian's three other sectional qualifiers lost their first-round matches, and then were eliminated from wrestleback competition when their op­ ponents were defeated before making the finals. Freshman Bill Creighton suffered a 14-5 loss at the hands of Piano senior Jeff Hill, who entered the match with a 25-7 record. Chris Noe was stopped by Ken DeVries, 16-9, after Noe nearly recorded a first-round pin. Heavyweight John Powers was pinned by Bishop Mc- Namara's Kirk Kepner in his opening match of the tourney. "I think I can honestly say, without putting any pressure on Richie, that he can place down there," Garvey said confidently. "He and I saw some things in the match against Klausner that he can work on this week. It'll be a great experience for him." JHS girls swamped by vengeful Marengo JOHNSBURG -- Ah, sweet revenge. U n f o r t u n a t e l y f o r Johnsburg's girls' basketball team, it didn't get the revenge. It had revenge gotten against it. The Marengo Lady Indians avenged an earlier defeat to the Skyhawks, by posting a 47-33 Northwest Suburban Con­ ference win Saturday after­ noon. Johnsburg had claimed a 44-40 win earlier this season in Marengo. The loss came on the heels of a sluggish 36-31 JHS win over Grant Wednesday. "Against Grant, we had good shot selection," said Nancy Fahey, Johnsburg's head coach, "but the shots weren't falling. Against Marengo, though, our shot selection was terrible. We've got good shooters, though. I'm not wor­ ried. We're Just going through a cold spell." JOHNSBURG WAS bogged down by a lack of practice time, as the high school was closed due to weather twice in the past two weeks. "We only had one practice in four or five days (prior to the Grant game)," Fahey noted. "That may have been why our shots weren't falling. We hadn't touched a basketball in so long." The problem JHS faced in the Marengo contest was reboun­ ding. The Skyhawks were out- caromed by the Indians, one of the few such occasions all year. "It's very, very rare for us to get outrebounded," Fahey said. "I tell our team all the time, that rebounding is posi­ tioning more than it is height. Marengo's a taller team than we are. We fronted them in the tow post, because if we didn't, they'd score over us. Our post players couldn't get around them to get rebounding posi­ tion, and that's part of the reason for the problem. "THEY (the Indians) were getting three and four shots at the basket every time down," Fahey said. "Looking at the shot chart, you can see how many of their shots were from close range. They're just too good to let them do that." The Skyhawks were led by Laura Oeffling's 12 points. She was the only Johnsburg player in double figures. Against Grant, Vicki DuBeau led the way with 13, while Oeffl- ing tossed in 11. Johnsburg traveled to Round Lake Tuesday. County bowlers to state ROCKFORD - Eigh t McHenry County Farm Bureau members have earned the op­ portunity to advance to the Il­ linois Farm Bureau finals at the Sports Festival Bowling Classic March 9 in Springfield. Bert Rank, chairman, said the Open Class Men's team from McHenry County paced the tournament at Rockford for all 500 bowlers from 23 coun­ ties, with their victory in that event.
