The movie's syrupy-sweet characters and plot have also earned it the title of "The Sound of Mucus." Directed by Robert Wise, the musical is based on the true story of an Austrian family fleeing the Germans. It begins with novice nun Maria (Julie Andrews) becoming governess to the seven children of recently widowed Capt. Ccorg Von Trapp (Christo­ pher Plummer). She brings music back into their empty lives. Maria eventually decides to leave the convent and marry the captain. The movie's climax comes when Von Trapp, fiercely opposed to the German occupa­ tion of his beloved Austria, escapes with his family across the Alps to Switzerland. The memorable songs, such as "Climb Every Mountain" and "Edelweiss," are vintage Oscar and Hammerstein. "The Sound of Music" won five Oscars in 1965 for best picture, best director, best scoring, best editing and best sound.
