Roichardt Michael Catlin has his role of Thomas McCand- less, the handicapped doc­ tor on "Capitol." down to a science. "When I first joined the show, everyone thought I was disabled." says Catlin, "but little by little they're realizing that I'm not." Surprisingly. Catlin had no time to prepare for the demanding role. He got the part on a Monday evening and began work the follow­ ing morning. "I kind of stumbled through the role the first week." he says. Catlin later researched his handicapped character with the help of a friend, who is a neurosurgeon. "My friend and I discussed what's going on physiologi­ cally with Thomas." he says. "I learned some of the basic structural things about Thomas's condition. That helped us develop a realistic way for Thomas to walk with his crutches." He also observed handi­ capped people. "When I lived at the beach I saw a young man on crutghes one day. He really struck me because he was very personable and good-look­ ing. It seemed that the only difference between us was that his mobility in life was a little more awkward than Michaal Catlin mine," remembers Catlin. who studied the young man for several weekends. The two men later became friends. Catiin's portrayal of McCandless has had a pos­ itive impact on "Capitol" viewers. "The letters I receive from disabled people are extremely nice," he says. "Some of them say that they've been able to look at themselves more posi­ tively. That's more than I could have asked for as an actor." In the future. Catlin says he would like to explore his character's anger and rage. "Thomas has always been a nice guy." he says. "I'd like to get the chance to make him a little more human." ©IMS Computog
