This scene took place Tuesday near the intersection of Ringwood and Wilmot Roads, in Sunnyside. ' ' ' I . An examination by an otolaryngologist's (ear doctor) aumologist should cost from $25 to $35. Mittie can en courage her husband by ex plaining to him that millions of Americans are wearing hearing aids with satisfaction and, in countless cases, with much joy because they can hear everything in the world about them again--clearly and totally. At 72, t don't think it makes any difference whether other By Carl Riblet Jr. Q:"We senior citizens are sometimes laughed at for longing for the good old days, when there were horses and buggies and more farms and not so many problems. When freedom rang. Now we have too much machinery, too many automobiles, too much radio and television, too much leisure and entertainment, and too much pressure of advertising. I say- 'stop the world:' Most of us would like to get off, especially those of us who comprehend the simplicity of those good old days."--Ned W. ear and is barely noticeable, anyway. Mittie's husband will be able to hear normally and that is what counts. Once he tries it, he is certain to like it. Almost everybody does. The audiology test may shock him out of his reluctance to wear a hearing aid because he may learn how unhappy it is to miss so much that is good to hear and to thus inflict misunderstanding and irritation on others. " v •§ Q:"When my father died in Honolulu 16 years after serving in the Navy, my mother came here to North Carolina to live with me. She died last month at 80. While going through her papers after the funeral I found part of a classified ad page torn out of a Honolulu newspaper clacked and slid and rocked so with one ad circled in re4 pencil. removed at It aroused my curiosity, i don't says 'Him big fella bockus hit 'em teeth he cry. $150.' s an ad from a second-hand musical instrument store. Can you tell me what it means !"- Leilani M. A:A phone call to Honolulu supplied the answer. The words of the ad are pidgin English, once upon a time used by a music store in Honolulu as an attention-getter to advertise its merchandise. Pidgin English is a simplified speech for com- mbnication between people with different languages, par ticularly in the South Pacific imChii I A:Perhaps so. In pidgin, as I understand it, both people and things are referred to as "fella," big or little. Thus, "him big fella Mary" is a large or fat woman. "Him little fella Joe" is a small man. Any box, from a small shoe box to a huge truck- hauled container, is a "bockus" to all who speak pidgin. Leilani's mother probably was attracted to an advertisement for a used upright piano offered at $150, and bought it. Leilani can read the aa this way, "a piano, a big bockus (a box) has teeth (the piano keys) that when struck by the untutored make a sound that comes out like a cry." I hope Leilani writes to let me know if she remembers the piano in her home when she was a child in Honolulu. If you need information or help on problems of aging, write to Carl Riblet Jr., P.O.
