Rslchsrdt "Sant̂ Barbara" 's promise that it would have stories about minority fami lies on the new daytime soap was short-lived. Most of the Mexican-Americans on the show lasted about five or six months. Only the story line involving Cruz Castillo, played by A. Martinez, is still going strong. . Martinez, a third-genera tion Mexican-American, was born in Glendale, Calif. He studied drama at the University of California in Los Angeles before drop ping out to pursue his career. Has Martinez been con tinually typecast because of his ethnic background? "Not at all." he says. "One of my best perfor mances. one that I'm par- • ticularly proud of. was play ing Lenny in the Harold Pinter play 'The Homecom ing.' " His Latin heritage actual ly helped him land the lead role in PBS's production of "Seguin," which told the story of an unknown Mexi can hero during Texas's battle tor independence. Martinez has also-appeared VVWillie" films "the Cow boys" and "Beyond .the Limit." A. Martinez can soap-opera character, Martinez says. "I have been careful not to play Cruz as an overbearing type. He's chauvinistic though, without being offensive. He's a man's man who many feminists would probably even like. "My family and friends have provided me with a lot of material to shape Cruz." he says. "My brothers are the kind of guys I'd like to have with me if I ever need ed to be protected." When he's not working, Martinez spends his time with his wife. Leslie. They met while working on the film "La Chiva." Martinez also devotes time to his interest in song writing. He refers to his.musical crea tions 4* i' 'iids'-Aog^es rock." b
