Fla (NBC) SPORTS WORLD (A0C) SPORTSBEAT UH, HUH, YOU KNOW -- Billy Packer, the CBS-TV basketball commentator, has had it with interviewing players who glide on basketball floors like gazelles and score 20 points a game, only to clam up, stutter and stare at their sneakers when being asked how they did it. Packer is doing something about it! Packer is sure most mummylike athletes are intel ligent and personable, but they just haven't had the same expert coaching in answering questions they had in getting the ball in the basket. So the former Wake Forest hoop coach and Brent Musberger's TV sidekick on college games has devised a crash course for college athletes in the public eye. He has put together an audio-visual presentation he has tried out on the Georgetown basketball team, b<Jt he mumbled himself when asked about its success "I don't want to give away my course," he said, after telling a few of the pointers he gives players, such as remembering to smile, to speak distinctly and to look at the interviewer and the camera in the eye He also tells them to know the facts about the opponents, so the player can discuss the other team intelligently For their role model. Packer cites Doug Flutie He called Flutte a "super natural." whose direct clear responses, smiling demeanor (with 7 mil in the kick, who wouldn't smile?) and on-camera personality make him a good interView In his demonstration. Packer uses a film clip of President Reagan in his first debate with Walter Mondale last fall, pointing out that even a "Great Communicator" can sometimes have a night off He recommends that before a big game key play ers take a hint from Reagan and others to assure a smooth extemporaneous interview by writing down and memorizing answers to the expected ques tions Hey Seymour!
