, t HISTORIC BUILDING Page 3 - PLAIN DEALER-HERALD. FRIDAY . MARCH 8. 1985 iContinurd from ftagr 11 dance hall and a roller-skating rink. In November of 1934, Everett Hunter bought the building for a sum recorded as $500. The two noted > that there may be some discrepancy here as this was the height of the Depression, but nonetheless, Cecilia Knox sold the building to Hunter in 1934. The Ford agency was still there, although under the new name of Page-Buss. In about 1936, the Page- Buss dealership moved across town. In its place, two companies began operation: Rossman's Nash agency on street level and the Hunter Boat Company. Hunter also owned what is now Hansen Marine, across the river, and the sub division known as "Hunterville Park." During the war years, 1942-1945, the building did its part by housing a factoiry that made tents for the U.S. Army. When World War II ended, the tent factory went out of business in short order. This provided Sam and Madeline Nathanson an opportunity to move their dre^s factory from the building across the intersec tion to what would become the Riverside Retail Outlet. Ekeroth commented that the Nathanson's provided > employment for many teenagers and young married women in their dress factory. "Since we bought this place, I've had more people come to me and say they used to work here," Ekeroth said. The Nathansons manufactured dresses in the fac tory from 1945 to about 1951, when there was a short break in the business. Sam Nathanson opened another shop in town, Magic Pants, but the two reopened the building as a retail establishment in about 1953. It was then called the Riverside Retail Outlet. It remained as such until Dec. 8, 1984, when Ekeroth and Cooney bought the building. "I was amazed when it came on the market," Ekeroth said. "I had always assumed the Nathan- sons owned the building." They didn't. In fact, for just over the last 50 years, the building has been owned by Hunter (or his estate). Ekeroth said the building was "capitalized" for $20,000 when it was built. "A lot of carpenters worked for a dollar-a-day put ting this building up," Cooney said. RTAbus stop moved McHenry residents paying bills at city hall will have an easier time of it as the council voted unanimously to move the RTA bus stop and provide 10- minute parking in front of the building. The bus stop will now be on the bridge to the north of city hall and one spot will be designated for handicapped parking. The McHenry County Historical Museum, located in Union, was the scene recently for a gathering of quilters from all over the county, both ex perienced and learners. The groups worked on com pleting a large grandmother's fan design hand-stitched quilt and a baby quilt. The quilts, along with others that the historical society is working on, are used for demonstrations when school groups tour the museum. Once completed, the quilts help raise money to operate the society's historical museum, which is not tax supported. Quilting will continue at the museum on the second and fourth Wednesdays. All those interested in participating in the quilting bee's are invited. For information concerning the quilting bees, use of the museum's local history research library, school tours, and museum programs which will begin in May, contact the museum daily at (815) 923-2267. Plaindealer Herald photo by Anthony Oliver Lee Cooney (left) and Larry Ekeroth are doing a lot of the remodeling themselves. The western hats have a significance, Cooney says, noting the picture that appears on the front page. The two said they may try to reproduce that photo with the modern-day contractors when work is completed. TAXES! Nobody Like* Them! Everybody Has To Deal With Them * HELP!
