Page 8 • PLAINDEALER-HERALD, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 13.1985 Naturalist to lead first of local nature walks MCC classes to be held at Old Prairie Grove School On Sunday, March 17, naturalist Bill Wingate, will lead a walk at 2 p.m. through Trout Park in Elgin. The walk will be the first of a series of monthly "Wonders with Wingate" to local nature areas sponsored by McHenry County Defenders, a local en- viornraental organization. Experiencing the awakening of nature from its winter sleep will be the primary focus of the walk. A highlight of the awakening is the appearance of skunk cabbage, the first blooming flower of the spring season. Also, blue ash, witch hazel and pagoda dogwood will be some of the many plant species participants will ob­ serve. The approximately 50 acres of Trout Park is a unique site. It was established as one of the first Illinois Nature Preserve areas and has been owned by the City of Elgin since the 1920's. The park also was one of the highest ranking sites on the recently completed Illinois Natural Areas Inventory list. Trout Park is located off Rt. 25 south of Rt. 90 in Elgin. The building has been restored, painted and lights installed. The parking lot has been unearthed from beneath its growth of weeds. Windows have been uncovered, allowing a full view of the countryside. Among the MCC classes to be held there is Bridge For The Beginner. It will start Friday, April 5, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and run for 10 weeks. It will be taught by Judy Peterson. The cost is $28. Dancercize will begin Tuesday, April9 and meet every Tuesday and Thursday, 7 The class to 8 p.m., for eight weeks, is designed for those who have not recently been exercising regularly. It emphasizes basic exercise and aerobic movements and involves toning, conditioning and stretching to music. The cost is $25. The instructor will be Clare Deacon. Men are encouraged to enroll in the Fitness and Exercise for Men class. Clare Deacon will teach the class Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 8 to 9 p.m., beginning April 9. Men don't always have the exercise outlets available to women. The class offers a chance to put on sweats and spend an hour toning, conditioning and stretching to music. The fee is $25. The class will meet for eight weeks. The dance team of Wayne and Barbara Konkle will offer Beginning and Intermediate Ballroom Dancing for adult couples at the Old Prairie Grove School on Thursday evenings beginning April 11, continuing through May 30. One class will meet 7 to 8:30 p.m. and the other from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. The fee is $35. Registration can be handled by calling the college at 455-6510 through March 15 and in person thereafter.
