"Because of this growing emphasis on Illinois education, I have written a questionnaire dealing with general school policy, curriculum and funding. I believe the best way to deal with the topic of education reform, is to first find out how the public feels," said Schaffer. The questionnaire covers many of the five areas outlined for educational reform, by Thompson. These areas are: teacher compensation, curriculum, school ac countability, consolidation ef forts and the learning en vironment; in schools. "Ther entire Senate body will be dealing with inadequacies in the school system, one of the highest priorities of this legislative session. In order to improve the future of this state, we must first improve the education our children receive," explained Schaffer. "Throughout this session, many otner hearings are planned to develop a workable solution to reform Illinois education," said Schaffer. "Since this topic affects almost everyone in the state, my estionnaire asks for people to are with *^e their feelings on the topic." Woman wants to begin horse-and-buggy business PUiadMlcr Herald Ncwb Service A Crystal Lake woman is trying to bring a touch of Michigan Avenue to Woodstock Square. Pat Hippert hopes to bring horse-and-buggy rides to Woodstock on a permanent basis. "A horse and buggy fits in so well in Woodstock," said Hippert, who, with her brother Tom Cullerton owns Gold Coast Carriage, one of the companies that operates in Chicago. Hippert wants to hitch up her horse and buggy on a trial basis, beginning next weekend, and operate the two following weekends. If business is good and the city council is agreeable, Hippert said she would like to operate it throughout the spring and summer months. Hippert said she has been working with the Woodstock ice on a route for the rides. »r tentative plan would have the carriage leave from somewhere on the square, travel up West Jackson Street to Hill Street by City Park and then return to the square via West Judd Street. The buggies, which she wants to operate in the evening as well as during the day on Saturdays and Sundays, are equipped with lights and turn signals. "If you're real careful, they're no bother to anyone," she said. On Thursday, March 14, Dr Scott Hickman will present a slide program, "Birds of Illinois Beach State Park," to the McHenry County Chapter of Illinois Audubon Society. The program will be given at 7:30 p.m. in the multi-purpose room of Husmann Elementary School (formerly known as Central Grade School), at 131 W. Pad dock St. in Crystal Lake. & Hickman is a biology in structor at the College of Lake County in Gray slake. He typically spends his summers conducting breeding bird censuses and avian ecological investigations for various governmental agencies. His research interests include bird flight, management of non- game birds and avian ecology. In addition to the slides and recordings of bird calls, Dr. Hickman will discuss the study of breeding birds made at Illinois State Beach Park by Scott and James Neal in 1981. He will describe the study's methodology, its most significant findings, and the hazards of fragmenting bird habitats. The public is invited to attend. No admission charge will be made, but donations will be accepted to help defray the costs of the program. Free lecture set on cataracts Northern Illinois Medical Center invites the public to a free lecture on "Cataract Treatment in the 80's" on Wednesday, March 13 at McHenry Hall, 3516 W. Waukegan Rd., McHenry, Room IE. Robert Gibula, MD, who will give the lecture, has been on the staff of NIMC for five years. He is an opthalmologist with an office in Crystal Lake and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Opthalmology, a diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners and of the American Board of Op thalmology. As recently as five years ago, cataract surgery involved a hospital stay of several days and a highly-restricted recovery period lasting six to eight weeks. Rapid advances in technology have made astounding im provements in cataract surgery which have both eased and shortened the recovery period for patients. The surgery may now also be performed on an outpatient basis. The lecture will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. and is part of an older adult lecture series. Other topics coming up in the series are "Diabetic Care," on April 17; "Psycho-social Aspects of Aging," on May 8, and "What to wVion thp Paramedics SEEDLINGS There is still time to order seedling trees and shrubs for spring plantings.
