And it wasn't looking good for Harvard. But a couple of defensive alterations were thrown at him and Hornet Erik Schimke lived up to his bleacher battle cry : "The Moose is on the loose!" The defensive change throttled SV's Brian Godfread and Schimke broke loose for a game high 22 points to lead Harvard to a 68-53 Oregon Class A Sectional championship and a berth in Illinois' Sweet Sixteen Super-Sectional. All-stater Jamie Martin poured in 21 and point-guard Tom King fired in 14, included the Hornets' first six points. Godfread ended the game with 18. Sixteen came in the first 10 minutes. Martin also surpassed the 19- year-old single-season scoring record on his first shot of the game. Martin, who has 589 points on the season, is 38 points away from breaking the all-time career Harvard scoring record of 1,306 points. "Stillman Valley publicly issued a challenge," Harvard coach Bruce Firchau said. "And I was glad to see the way our kids responded. They're a very mature team, and they showed it."-,, ( Harvard, the fourth-ranked team in the state at 27-1 and riding a 25-game winning streak, was challenged by tiny Ohio at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Chick Evans Fieldhouse on the Northern Illinois University campus in DeKalb. That's a step away from the Illinois High School Association state quarterfinals Friday. It's the closest Harvard has ever come to Champaign. For a quarter and a half Friday, the Cardinals had Harvard on the ropes, leading 18-16 after the first period and 22-18 when Godfread sank a pair of free throws with 6:06 left in the half., . Stillman Valley' three times to move it# lead to six, but bricks were thrown up. Finally, Schimke canned a 6- footer over 6-foot-9 Godfread and moved around the Card for another bucket to tie it at 22. The Hornet followed with a pair of free throws off a foul on God fread for the Hornets' first lead since early in the first quarter. "Stillman played just a beautiful first quarter," Har vard coach Bruce Firchau said. "And we were still in the ballgame." Before the game, Firchau told Stillman Valley coach Jeff Schad that he hadn't seen a team have as good a six days as the Cards had. "They had me very concerned," Firchau said. Stillman was on a roll, posting big wins over South Beloit, Winnebago and Mount Morris. Firchau thought the game would be a nailbiter, "or we were going to burst their bub ble." And when the Hornets turned the ball over three times early in the second quarter, "I was thinking, 'This isn't going to be the way we're going to burst their bubble.' " Schad figured the Hornets would work on Godfread. But he thought the Cards could get around it from the perimeter, where they average better than 50 percent. "We didn't hit our shots," Schad said. "We didn't have consistent outside shooting. We just couldn't seem to buy a bucket." Stillman Valley, which ended the season at 23-7, was held to just six points in the second quarter while the Hornets reeled off 16 for a 32-24 halftime ad vantage. After Godfread canned his second-quarter free throws, the Cardinals went nearly four minutes without scoring again. Mike Buck finally scored inside for a 24-24 tie. But Harvard nailed the next eight points for an eight-point lead, the biggest of the game. Martin followed Buck's bucket VACATION ON LAKE GENEVA! To contain Godfread, the Hornets trapped passers in the corners, hoping to disrupt delivery to Godfread. "We tried to hurry the pass a little bit," Firchau said. Taking a page from the Marian Central 2-3 zone, he added, "we were fronting and backing God fread." King's three buckets in the first quarter, kept the score tied at 6 three minutes into the game. The score was tied at 8 and 10 when Martin and Schimke answered baskets by Godfread and Scott Nicholson. "When we played Stillman the first time (a 14-point win), Godfread did a real good job of intimidating Erik's shots," Firchau said. Hie Moose was limited to just six points then. Once he got his first couple baskets Friday, he was OK; he gained ^confidence against Godfread. Stillman moved the lead to four when Godfread scored inside and Don Willis hit a 20 footer before Shimke scored again. Godfread drove the base to return it to four, but Schimke hit over the center. It was back to four at 18-14 when Godfread dropped in a short one from the right base. Hornet Jay Jones pulled the Hornets within a pair with a baseline drive. The Cards played with abandon - too much abandon - in the second half, hoping to draw the charging fouls. However, Stillman Valley became too aggressive, and began picking up fouls. The Hornets devastated the Cards from the foul line. "We just had to go, and that's the style of team we are," Schad said. "The game went just so physical there for a while. With (Harvard holding) a nine-point lead, it's a little difficult to come back when it's aggressive like that. "It was as physical as could be, both ways. I think our frustration got in our way."' The Hornets responded by hitting 20-of-27 free-throw at tempts in the half. Harvard was 26-of-34 for the game - 77 percent - while Stillman went to the line only five times. Godfread went to the bench with 3:55 to play in the third quarter with four fouls. The Cards were trailing 40-29 after Jones hit the free throws, and Godfread didn't return until early in the fourth quarter with Stillman trailing 55-43. Nicholson picked up his third foul early in the third quarter, and starter Bob Behmer fouled out with five minutes to play. Stillman cut Harvard's lead to five points early in the third quarter, but Schimke's three- point play returned it to eight. Harvard went up 42-29 with 3:22 to go with a pair of buckets by Martin and free throws by Jones.
