SECTION 2 - PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER-HERALD, FRIDAY, MARCH 15,1985 Church Alliance Bible Church announces its annual Missions Conference I. • Alliance Bible Church of McHenry, located just east of Route 31, is hosting its annual Missions Conference for four days, beginning this Sunday, March 17. Two missionaries will be participating in activities during that time. A native African setting will provide a taste of what fife is like in Carolyn Burge's field of Birkina Faso. Randolph Brock, director of the Thailand Maranatha Bible School, will also address those in attendance and participate in the various activities. Among the events planned are a parade of nations by the children during the Sunday morning service; a slide presentation Sunday night by Burge; Monday evening's coffee conference with Brock; Tuesday's WMPF luncheon with both missionaries, followed by that evening's exciting and exotic plane trip; and a Wed nesday men's dinner with Brock. For a more complete li& of activities and their times, contact Mrs. Craig at 385-1519. During the conference, there will be opportunities to speak to the missionaries in some depth. Those wondering if the Lord wants to call ' them to be missionaries, but are afraid because they don't know what the missionary life would be like, can ask one of the missionaries and find out. Burge and Brock would also like to give everyone their answer to the question, "Have you wondered if the Lord is really faithful to those who have given their lives in field service to Him?" All those interested are in vited to attend and it is suggested they prepare beforehand by spending time in prayer so that if the Lord wishes to speak to them, they will be ready to hear. A comparative religions course entitled "Religions of the East" will be offered . A comparative religions course entitled "Religions of the East: Reform Hinduism, Zen Buddhism and Shinran Bud dhism" will be offered by the Rev. Dianne Arakawa at the Congregational Universalist Church of Woodstock, March 17, 23 and 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. The church, which is affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ, is located at 221 Dean Street. On March 17, Sunrit Mullick of Calcutta, India, will speak on Brahmo Samaj, a reform Hindu movement. Mullick, whose family has belonged to this sect for six generations, received his undergraduate degree and master's degree in comparative religions from Visva-Bharati University in Bengal. He is presently a graduate student at Meadville-Lombard Theological Seminary in Chicago and a member of the Board of Trustees of the International Association for Religious Freedom-U.S. Chapter.. On March 24, Ray Witham, a priest at the Zen Buddhist Temple of Chicago, will speak on Zen Buddhism. He plans to devote a portion of the class to an understanding of zazen or meditation. -Finally, on March 31, Dr. Hideo Tomomatsu will speak a)>out Shinran Buddhism, perhaps the most popular form of Japanese Buddhism. Born and raised in Tokyo, Japan, and ordained a priest, he received his master's degree in chemistry from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif. and his PhD from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. The public is invited to sign up for the series of classes by phoning the church at 338-0731. $T JOHN SPRING '85 OUR RESPONSE TO TIC LORDS CAU. Musicians will perform at Unity Church Crystal Lake Pictured from left to Reverend John C. H Baptist Catholic Church in Ji it are Julie Harrison, the »pastor of St John the Harrison, securing a sign on the church, as Mathew Harris* and Tom of the son looks on. The pur- rHaraMpboto by Robert Gordon pose of the sign, painted by Mrs. Harrison, is to let everyone know that the parish is undergoing the RENEW program, an ongoing spiritual three- year process. "On Sunday, March 17, at 11 a.m., Unity Church of Crtystal Lake will be blessed with the love and musical sharing of Ed and Gail Tossing," stated R. Brian Combs, minister. The Tossings, who are the musicians at Unity on the North Shore, will be presenting an entirely musical service interspersed with spiritual readings and poetry. "If you have not heard Ed and Gail before-and even if you have-you're in for a delightful treat," Combs continued. "The love, joy and talent they express place them among the most popular of New Thought en tertainers. You're all invited to share in this spirit-lifting ex perience." Immediately after the ser- re will be a potluck join us for some good conversation tual fellowship," urged nffidrx Unity Church of Crystal Lake is located at 3 Chalet Dr., nor thwest of the intersection of U.S. Routes 14 and 31. It is an inter denominational Christian church which warmly welcomes people of all belief systems. Sunday worship services are held at 11 a.m. For additional information, call 455-2479. Present cantata The Ridgefield-Crystal Lake Presbyterian Church will present a Lenten cantata Sunday, March 17, using the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, whose three-hundredth birthday anniversary is March 21. The choir will perform the Bach Cantata No. 4, "Christ lag in Todesbanden" during both the 8:30 and 11 a.m. services. Soloists will be Sheila Mohler, Crystal Lake, Jim Hutchings and Gary Salman, McHenry, and Tom Steffens, Woodstock. The choir is under the direction of Hrael Dunn and accompanied by AnhLegg. All are invited to attend and enjoy this musical celebration at either worship service. The church is located at 8505 Church St., in Ridgefield. Everyone is reminded of RENEW at St. John the Baptist Church St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Johnsburg, continues in the second session of RENEW entitled, "Our Response to God's Call," which coincides during this season of Lent for six weeks. They are presently in the fourth week, "Decision For Jesus." A sign being erected is to remind everyone that the church is undergoing a three- year ongoing spiritual process in RENEW, the parish program carefully designed to help people follow Christ more closely. "RENEW intends td help people get to know and love Jesus better by more clearly understanding the things He said and taught," according to Father John C. Holdren, pastor of the parish. "RENEW hopes to make it easier for people to get to understand one another better and to form networks of friendship through their com mon friend, Jesus," he said. The parish is involved at St. John's with special homilies each Sunday on the theme of the Mass; weekday services that highlight the basic theme for the life and teachings of Jesus; meetings among small groups and activities done at homes by the families along with special pamphlets for each week, which is a special guide book for helping people to reflect privately upon their own spiritual growth. One-quarter to one-half of the parish of St. John the Baptist, either directly or indirectly, is involved in the RENEW program for the second session. RENEW is different according to the pastor and it is a challenge to new spiritual growth for the whole parish, including people not usually involved with the parish and those who presently are not attending church. The greatest support of RENEW, according to Father Holdren, is to offer prayers for its success and to give encouragement to those preparing the parish effc RENEW effort. These include Joe and Jan Phelan, Vi Kuczwara, Ron and Chris Marulewski, Phil and Alice Hoffman, Charlie and Mary Lynn Madsen, Jim and Peg Abell, Glenda Wieck, Tom and Julie Harrison, Joan and Peg Clark, Mark and Sandi Sch- mitt, Pat Savino, Chuck and Nancy Majercik, and Virginia Spengel.
