"It's kind of a dream come rue," said Harvard coach Bruce Firchau Thursday norning before the Hornets left >y motor coach to Champaign and the Illinois High School Association state quarterfinals, Harvard, which normally reserves its craziness for Milk )ays, has caught Hornet Fever, symptom of a general con dition throughout seven other communities in the state. "This is what they call March badness and Harvard's got a real bad case of it, which is great," he said. It's not painful, mind you; it's euphoric. "We have to cut the hype and tie emotional things and con- entrate on Aima-Jonesboro," Firchau said. "Once we get down there, it going to be all business. We've got both feet on the ground." Harvard, which is the fourth- ranked team in the state at 28-1 and riding the longest winning streak in Class A basketball at 26 games, plays 21-8 Anna- Jonesboro at 8:30 p.m. Friday in Assembly Hall. A loss, and the season is over. The winner advances to Saturday's 12:45 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the Madison-Chrisman game. The loser plays in Saturday's 6 p.m. game for third place. The winner advances to the 8:15 p.m. Class A title game. "(The Wildcats) play a good schedule, so their record is deceiving," Firchau said. The Egyptian Conference in the southern-most end of TlHnnfo is called one of the toughest Class A conferences in the state. The Wildcats, who nipped DuQuoin 69-68 in the final seconds of the Carbondale Super-Sectional, are another small but quick, fast-breaking team, according to the Harvard scouting report. Jerry Engle and Lee Ket- terhagen, coaches of the 1965-66 Hornets who won Harvard's last regional championship, flew to Carbondale to scout the Wildcat- Indian game. "One of the coaches down south called Anna-Jonesboro one of the best-shooting teams down state," Firchau said. They are led by senior 6-foot-4 center Robbie Wright and senior 6-1 forward Brian Ury, who was the quarterback of the Class 3A Wildcat state championship football team. Wright poured in 25 points against DuQuoin and Ury notched 21. "We're on a bit of a roll," said Wildcat coach Mike Crews. "We had to come out of a tough tournament series." Firchau said Wright plays the high post well and is similar to Marengo's Paul Williams. Ury has an excellent touch from the baseline, and 5-11 senior guard Roger Shoate and 6-0 junior forward Jim Morrison are good outside shooters. Shoate's free throws with four seconds left sealed the 'Cats super-sectional victory. , • Rounding out the starting five for Anna-Jonesboro is 5-8 senior guard Joel Reed. Jeff Denny, a 6-1 junior, and David Prater, a 6- 3 sophomore, are the Wildcats top reserves. Reportedly, Anna-Jonesboro relies heavily on its starting five, as does Harvard, which will open with 6-6 all-state forward Jamie Martin, 6-5 center Erik Schimke, 6-1 for ward Mike Fisher, 6-3 all-state honorable mention point guard Tom King and 5-9 guard . Jay Jones. All are seniors: Mike Jones, a 5-9 junior, is the Hor nets' sixth man. "We know we'll have to go after them hard defensively," Crews said. It a formidible task, but Crews knows the Wildcats will have to attempt to cut off Martin, Schimke and King. Many have tried, few have succeded. Martin shoots 69 percent from the field, averaging 21.9 points and 10 rebounds a game. Schimke follows with 13.5 points and eight rebounds a game. King cracks double figures at 12.6 ppg. Fisher and Jay Jones both average nearly eight points a game. "They have so much con fidence in themselves and each other," Firchau said. He often talks about their chemistry as a team. None is selfish, all love to dish off assists. Both teams are newcomers to the state quarterfinals. Harvard has never advanced as far, and its last regional title was in 1965- 66 in one-class basketball. That team advanced to sectional play, six games into the tour nament. Anna-Jonesboro's last trip to the state tournament was more than 40 years ago in 1944. The Wildcats' last regional title came in 1961-62. Despite the hoopla surroun ding Harvard's first trip to the state finals in the school's long basketball history, the players are cool and collected. "I'm probably the most emotional one of the whole group," Firchau said. "I think they've done a pretty good job of settling me down over the years." The Hornets won't change a thing in their game plan this weekend. "We aren't going to change anything we've done to get us this far," Firchau said. presents •• ® THE BRANDTHAT FITS...
