Both media critics and television viewers have long been upset with the time-honored network poli cy of withholding the exact schedule of events to be aired on anthology shows. 1 "But hey," says Bob Iger. newly appointed "vice president of program acquisition for ABC Sports, "how many times did you hear Ed Sullivan come out and say, 'the Beatles are here tonight. In about 50 minutes'?" One of Iger's responsibil ities is to return ABC's "Wide World of Sports" to its exalted position atop the' Nielsen ratings "The name of the game is keeping the audience." says Iger. "TV is entertain ment. And sports is enter tainment. But we do not have a license to forfeit our journalistic integrity by call ing it 'entertainment.' " The days of segments devoted to (slip. New York's world-famous Dem olition Derby extravagan zas and Evel Knievel's daredevil stunts were the heady days of anthology- dom; sanity was conven iently misplaced for profit's sake. Today. ABC's new earlier starting time (4:30 p.m. on the East Coast) admirably makes room for a 6 p.m network news show, but shrinks "Wide World" 's potential viewing audience But Iger under stands the main problem Saturation How much more boxing and Mary Lou Jim McKay Retton can we stomach? "It's a very tough flme for anthology shows/' admits Iger. "The challenge c. is to keep the thing fresh. But quality doesn't always translate into ratings." Last month, ABC aired the Race Across America Bike Marathon as a two- part feature. It is ironic that while the RAA didn't gen erate impressive ratings, its' uniqueness and sensitivity, seemed to represent the "human drama" .Jim McKay advertises each week in his introduction. And it is doubly ironic that 30 minutes of the second part of the RAA was lost when ABC. as is its long standing policy, stayed on until the conclusion of a live, five-set tennis final between Tim Mayotte and Scott Davis Damned if you do. damned if you don't. On Saturday. March 23. "Wide World" offers the World Ski Flying champion ships. from Planica. Yugo slavia. and the Atlanta 500 stock-car race
