The popularity of "Miami Vice" is fueled by Thomas, who plays Detective Ricardo Tubbs. a relocated New York officer, who works with Detective Sonny Crockett (John­ son) along the boulevards of Miami. "Anthony Yerkovich conceived the role of Tubbs around what my interpreta­ tion of a character was on an episode I did on "Starsky and Hutch.' says Thomas "When I read with Don. there was magic. What I expose on TV is |ust a tip of the iceberg Don and I have had similar careers Astrological- ly, our signs are fire and air. Which helps the combination. The best is yet to come -- and I don't intend to stop." Thomas had his own idea of how he perceived Tubbs "I had a conception about Tubbs when I first began." he says. "I conceived of him as a cat who has already lived eight lives. He always expects the unexpected He's been in the streets and is ready for anything. Right now the way ~ I'm playing my role, I'm a chameleon," Thomas continues. "I'm eating my role up. Tubbs will always keep hts edge Each week he is developing as a man, a policeman, a multidimensional character. You always have to expect the unexpected from me. This is my expression." And like his co-star Don Johnson, Thomas researched his role by spending time with local undercover detectives. Thomas's family also offered some assistance. "I did a lot of research for the role." he says "I never take anything for granted I talked to my older brother about Vietnam. My uncle was a police officer and I found that the honesty and integrity in him helped me create Tubbs "It's pretty realistic." Thomas says about the show. "We take artistic license in a sense that we make it flam­ boyant It should not be misconstrued. We are not trying to depict real life There are very few flamboyant police officers It's very regimented " "Miami Vice" may be new. but Thomas is hardly an overnight sensation "I lived the quality of life through the arts and it has given me a great dimension." Thomas says "What you have are two of the hottest artists today Both Don and I have gone through much to get where we are today.
