or out *•< .,r lants growing in hanging are attractive accents round indoors and the growing season outdoors. The principles of growing plants successfully in hanging baskets are tl^e same for all situations. all d The [EXTENSION) People AAAml For many years, wire frame containers were the main type of ng baskets used, usually There are now many dOHPes of plastic, ceramic, and Wooden containers available for hanging basket use. Many have a built-in saucer on the bottom to catch water running out of the containers, which is essential for indoor use. Physical ap pearance of the basket used isn't real important when using hanging plants that will cover it later with draping foliage. Lighweight soil mixtures are important. For indoor use, equal parts of loam soil, ver- miculite or perlite, and peat '? moss works well. Outdoors, soils in hanging baskets will dry out much faster due to wind, higher temperatures, and sunlight. Therefore, using a mixture of 2 to 3 parts loam soil, 1 part peat, and 1 part ver- miculite is suggested because it will tend to dry out slower. Hanging baskets need to be watered often, depending on the location. Plants growing out doors in summer may need to be watered daily, especially in hot weather. Water hanging baskets throughly to assure the entire root system gets adequate moisture. If the container has a saucer on the bottom, don't let water sit in it for extended periods of time. Due to increased watering, hanging baskets may need feeding fairly often. Houseplants fertilizers work well. Avoid heavy applications, however, to prevent plant in jury. Add small amounts and see how plants respond. Proper lighting is essential for plants to grow well in hanging baskets. Match light conditions with the plants intended to be used. When mixing various types of plants together, make sure they have similar requirements. Also, rotating baskets often assures uniform, healthy growth. There are many plants that will grow well indoors in hanging baskets. Recom mended species for medium light include Grape Ivy, German Ivy, Swedish Ivy, Boston Fern, Spider Plant, Pothos, Tahitian Bridal Veil, Philodendron, Pilea, Peperomia, and many others. Among the indoor plants for bright light are English Ivy, Strawberry Begonia, Wandering Jew, Piggyback Plant, and Sedum. During the growth season, many indoor hanging plants can be brought outdoors. Ad ditionally, there are numerous annual plants ideal for hanging baskets. For shade locations, Impatiens, Browallia, Begonias, Pansies, Coleus, and Lobelia all will do well. In full sun, Petunias, Portulaca (Moss> Rose), Madagascar Periwinkle, Verbena, Ageratum, and Salivia are good choices, among others.
