SECTION 2 • PAGE 2 - PLAINDEALER-HER ALD. WEDNESDAY. MARCH 20.1985 Nation/World Bach Bible is now on display Gone for years, a 17th Century Bible makes debut ST. LOUIS -- A 17th Century three-volume German Bible that once was owned by composer Johann Sebastian Bach before disappearing for 164 years is now on display at Concordia Seminary. The Bible, whi<?h was found in the possession of an elderly farmer in Frankenmuth, Mich., in 1934, is the only existing volume from Bach's extensive theological library. Inl733, Bach inscribed his name iQttM Bible. Upon his death in 1750 tnfc-»ible passed into he hands of his widow, Anna Magdalena, and then disappeared after her death 10years later. Historians say when and how the Bible came to America is unknown. All that can be established is that in 1847 a Ger man immigrant, Leonhard Reichle, purchased the three volumes from a used book dealer in Philadelphia. He took the Bible with him to Michigan where he settled and raised his family. Reichle apparently had no idea who the previous owner of the text was. That was not revealed until 1934, when Rcichle's son showed the text to the Reverend C.G. Riedel of Detroit. Attempts were made to per suade Reichle to donate the volumes to the Bach Museum in Eisenach. But Reichle, disen chanted with the growing Nazi movement in Germany, refused saying, "Germans are atheists." Instead he presented the volumes to the library at Concordia Seminary. v Throughout the three-folio volumes bound in pigskin, Bach entered personal observations, supplied missing Biblical texts, corrected typographical errors in the texts of both the commentary and the Biblical test, and wrote comments next to passages. Historians say the Bible is im portant because it offers sufficient rebuttal to those in Bach's time who argued that the composer was not a religious man. Bach regularly used "Jesu Juva," or Jesus be praised, at the start of many of his compositions and S D.G., or "soli Deo gloria," conclusion. But his critics claimed he merely wrote the inscriptions for his employer, the St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germarfy. In the margin of II Chronicles 5:13-4 Bach writes "in devotional music, God with his grace is always present." The volumes were published in 1682 and contain a German America cup gone, our fashions next? - to God alone be glory -- at their translation by Martin Luther. College credit for crafts MENOMONIE, Wis. - In a society of computers and career- planning, a university professor thinks helping students master wood working, ceramics or weav ing could be just the thing to return a little humanity to educa tion. "At first blush, people say Craftsmanship, hmm,' but as we explain, they understand," said James Bjornerud of the Universi ty of Wisconsin-Stout, a master wood craftsman and director of the school's new Center for Craft smanship. "You can justify it being a great desire on the part of an individual to work with something more human-oriented. There's nothing more human or self-revealing than working in a craft." Initiated a few months ago, the program for teaching traditional crafts is being treated as seriously as any other subject. NEW YORK - Move over, America, with your so-called rug ged wear. Here comes the real stuff from the bush down under -- moleskin trousers, pigskin vests, drover riding coats worn by ran chers to round up the sheep, cattle whips and pouched money belts. Authentic goods like these, marketed as the Australian Out back Collection, make Seventh Avenue's Western garb look like slick party clothes. John Turner, president of the .Sydney-based company and a native Canadian, whittles down his formula to right time, right place. He spends more than half the year in New York where his firm has a showroom on Fifth Avenue. "I think we hit a rising trend," says Turner, an international banker before he turned fashion plate. "By winning America's cup and the romance with Australia as an undiscovered frontier, there is a whole emotional thing that is at tracting people to our country. "We are what the West used to be here. I'm not talking cowboys. I'm talking non-violence, no drugs, bright sun, straight talking people." He's also talking big bucks. Sales volume could hit "a few million dollars" for 1985. Bits and ^pieces are also available at Koala Blue, Olivia Newton John's Australian bouti que in Los Angeles. A line that started with rain coats and rabbit fur hats has grown to include pigskin riding coats and vests, deerhunter jackets, Merino wool sweaters, flannel and tartan "swaggy" shirts, Fugi silk shirts inspired by the 30s, wool scarves patterned with Aborigine prints, sheep shearer's trousers, even jodphurs.
