Church Standing from left to right are Wally Johnson, Gayle Laursen, Helen Hankins and Mary Hahn, about to begin practicing with pianist Sally Manlctelow, in preparation for the celebration of Johann Sebastian Bach's three-hundredth birthday. . • • ' i Observe Bach's birthday On Sunday, March 24, at all three worship services, Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 N. Green St., McHenry, will celebrate the three-hundredth birthday of Johann Sebastian Bach., All the choirs and organists will help make this a special celebration by playing and singing his music. Bach wrote some of the most beautiful music in the history of humanity. Yet, his life could not be called beautiful; it was full of tragedy. By the age of 10, both parents had died. He was raised begrudgingly by an older brother, who resented another mouth to feed. Even as an adult, his life was difficult. His first wife died after 13 years of marriage. Of 20 children from two marriages, 10 died in infancy, one died in his 20's and one was mentally retarded. Eventually, he went blind and then was paralyzed by a stroke. Yet he wrote great music. Bach, a Lutheran, is con sidered one of the world's greatest composers of church • ?0rT music. Perhaps it was because he knew the depths of tragedy that he knew also the heights of faith and praise. Bach lived to worship God and to compose music to God's glory. At the end of each of his cantatas and oratorios, he in scribed S.D.G., initials for the Latin words, Soli Deo Gloria; "To God Alone the Glory." His chorale preludes for organ were dedicated to "the Most High God." At the beginning of his books of keyboard music, he inscribed I.N.J., In Nomine Jesu; "In the Name of Jesus." The praise of God pervaded the life and work of this man whose three-hundredth birthday is celebrated this year. He was born March 21, 1685, in Eisenach, Germany, now East Germany. Bach was an organist and composer, but his purpose in life was to live, love and work to the glory of God. Members of the community are invited to join in this special commemoration and also give thanks to God for this monumental maker of music in the church. * S p r i n g . Lincoln Rd., Sunday, March 24, at 7 p.m. Sunday School children and Youth Club children have combined their talents in order to present this Easter musical, which tells the story of Holy Week events as the animals involved would have told it. Animals represented include the donkey responsible for carrying Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the rooster, who crowed in Peter's denial of Jesus, and several sheep, one of which is sacrificed for Passover observances. Other animals portrayed in the play are a hen and the donkey's mother. The play is especially meaningful during the Lenten season, and is entertaining as well. Those who represent the animals are: Jamie Heinmiller, the donkey; Mike Bunting, rooster; Cathie Smith, rooster's wife; Kim Whittlinger, who plays Snowy, the sacrificial Passover lamb; Melissa Goodson, Jane Swobobda, and Dana Mueller, lambs who ob serve the events of Passover week; and Carol Burr, the donkey's mother. Many other children sing solos and participate in the musical part of the play. The public is invited to this performance and is encouraged to call the church for in formation at 385-5388. Faith Church is located at the corner of Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads. Page 9- PLAINDEALER-HERALD, FRIDAY . MARCH 22.1985 ' HARDWARE STORES Sffiiwi RnniraJIps LAST 3 DAYS!
