The BOX SEAT Zen and the art of home run hitting i By Adam Beckerman In Japan, baseball's reg ular season has hegun. but the Tokyo Giants and the Hiroshima Carp will not be making any American net work appearances this year. For the inquisitive fan interested in the Eastern approach, here is a book explaining how one super star played the summer game The application of the Japanese psyche to an American sport constitutes the core of "Sadaharu Oh: A Zen Way of Baseball" (Times Books. $14.95.). the autobiography of baseball's most prolific home-run hitter. Oh is the Tokyo Giant first baseman who retired in I980 after exceeding Henry Aaron's dinger total by 113. For 19 of his 22 seasons. Oh wait ed for the pitch balanced on one foot, like a flamingo. Such a stance represented the culmination of hours spent collaborating with his ^.batting instructor-cum- mentor. Hiroshi Arakawa, who. like a godsend, had entered Oh's life just when it seemed his third year in the bigs would be his last. Floundering at the plate and consoling himself with frequent trips to the Ginza bars. Oh opened himself to Arakawa in the desperate hope of untapping the potential he had demon strated in high school. Oh's recounting of how Arakawa incorporated into his meth od of batting concepts from Noh theater, Zen the ory and Aikido sword tech nique reads like a methodi cal yet impassioned search for a cure to a deadly disease. "Our work was not to triumph over natural forces, but to become one with them, to discover that what was in and outside of my body were part of a sin gle force, even when they seemed to be divided opposition." Eventually, the home runs came. For this son of a Chinese father and Japa nese mother, hitting from his unique stance evolved into a way of being which afforded him a greater understanding of his game and himself. Disappoint ment over not being even his team's most beloved player was channeled into an obsessive resolve towards hitting even harder and farther. Eventually. Oh began to handle pressure with a sense of composure and regality befitting both his position in Japanese society and his name, which in Chinese means "king." Oh is currently the mana ger of the Tokyo Giants. He has sought his lessons in life with a willing tpirit but a guarded heart. He has learned "the meaning of waiting on one foot." His serenity shows he is pre pared to give. ©' IVOtt. - © MOVK: Hot Dog: The Movie' (CC) 11:00PM 0 Nashville Now O ABC Recks 0 (2D MOVK: The Beasts Are In the Street' Animals es cape from a wildlife preserve causing havoc in a nearby town. This season. "Three's Company" became "Three's a Crowd." New life was pumped into an old show when Tripper (John Ritter) moved in with stewardess Vicky Bradford, played by newcomer Mary Cadorette. Miss Cadorette won the role of Vicky Bradford in Janu ary 1984. And during her first season, she's already prov en that she's settled into the role quite comfortably. "I don't think the writers knew what they wanted until they absolutely saw it." the actress says. "I think they had a general concept of what they wanted in the beginning. I guess I was pretty much what they were looking for." While the show's premise may be compared with its predecessor, Miss Cadorette says of her character: "I think the day of the ditzy blonde is over. Vicky is no dum my and I hope she's a reflection of the women of the 80's. I think that people want intelligence in their characters, especially their female characters, because women are really starting to control the TV dial. Granted it's a sitcom and it's still farcical in nature, but there's a lot of physical comedy and a lot of tenderness between Jack and Vicky, too." It's obvious that the chemistry between the stars has worked. In addition to Ritter, Miss Cadorette also applauds Robert Mandan. who plays her father. "As the show's been developing, there's been moments for Vicky and also for her father to show that they really love one another." she says. "Our set is real special and we've all grown fond of each other. I learn a lot working with the both of them." Besides the camaraderie, the actress enjoys interviews. "I love the show and I like to promote the show. It's still so fresh and I'm so excited about it. I strive to keep that, to always maintain that excitement about the show because in the scheme of things to have been chosen from a lot of people and make it to a level beyond where I was before, it's a real measure of how the public accepts you and reacts to you." ©t 0 INN News © Top Rank Boxing from Us Vogas, NV © NightFUght © Hat Properties © MOVK: 'Farced Venge- © MOVK: 'Song Is Born' © (3D Celebration © MOVK: The Informer' A slow-witted traitor of the Irish Rebellion cannot understand why he should be punished. Thanks to their creative input on "Parif," director Vincente Minnelli and Cene Kelly reshaped the American movie musical, elevating it to risky and dizzying cinematic heights. Today, 34 years after its release, the 1951 spectacle still leaps across the screen, filling viewers with joyful wonder and $450,000 worth of breathtaking movement. Paris nev er looked lovelier in Technicolor. Cene Kelly chose Leslie Caron, then just 19 years old, as his co-star; the actor had seen Miss Caron per form two years earlier in France's pretigious dance company, Ballet de Champs Elysee.
