Class sessions will be conducted from 1 to 3:15 p.m. each Monday through May 13. Sponsored by the Illinois Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, the Arthritis Self- Help Course is designed to provide class members with the skills and knowledge they need to take a more active role in arthritis care. Participants will learn how to design a personal exercise program, manage pain, use medications ef fectively, cope with special problems, work with health-care professionals,as well as review other related topics. y "Although there is, as yet, no cure for arthritis, there is quite a bit that can be done to control the pain and suffering which come with it," said Chris Bassi, instructor of the course. "An Oratorio singers slate concert for April 14 Music by Brahms and Bruckner will be performed by the New Oratorio Singers on Sunday, April 14, at 5:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Woodstock. The contemporary church setting provides interesting counterpoint to the emotional, romantic richness of the music. Bruckner's "Mass No. 3 in F minor," a difficult work, was declared unsingable by his contemporaries, who became devotees after hearing it per formed. Poetry by Goethe, full of pathos and introspection, inspired Brahms' "Alto Rhapsody," for alto, orchestra and men's chorus. Thomas Wikman, founding conductor of The New Oratorio Singers in 1979, has a com mittment to provide exposure to grand choral works for singers and audience alike in the nor thern Illinois area. Members of the chorus come from 30 com munities, in a 50-mile radius of Chicago. Karen Brunssen, mezzo- soprano, has returned to sing with The New Oratorio Singers. Past appearances have included "Elijah" and the Verdi "Requiem," as well as concerts with the Elgin Symphony, the Milwaukee Symphony, and the St. Louis Symphony. Ms. Brunssen teaches voice at Concordia College in River Forest. Reserved tickets are available by calling (815) 338-4205 or (312) 381-5625. Ticket prices are $15 and $20. The concert is supported in part by a grant from the Barrington Area Arts Council- ARTS-BOOST and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.
