MARCH 27.19115 Sports Bulls fire Thorn; Loughery may be next By Susan Kuczka UPI sports writer CHICAGO - The Chicago Bulls tapped their resources with the Chicago White Sox baseball organization Tuesday and replac ed fired general manger Rod Thorn with former NBA scout Jerry Krause. The shakeup renewed specula tion that the Bulls, recently ac quired by White Sox co-owner Jerry Reinsdorf, would next seek to dismiss Coach Kevin Loughery and trade controversial player Quintin Dailey. The Bulls signed Krause, 45, to a three-year contract, which will put him in charge of basketball operations, including coaching, player personnel and the draft. Financial terms of the pact were Win over Johnsburg is C-G's swan song' By Phil English rtaindMter Herald Newt Service CARPENTERSVILLE - The faces that lined Cary-Grove's bench Monday night, following a dismal 39-point Class AA Supersectional defeat to powerful Libertyville were not your or dinary, run-of-the-mill, depressed mugs. • "1 think we were just so happy we got this far," cheerful junior Trojan ace Liz Celske said. "No one expected us to even go this far, and if you would have told me at the beginning of the year that we would go as far as sectionals, I wouldn't have believed it." Well, believe it or not, the Tro jans fought tooth and nail to get as far as they did, several times just scraping out a victory. From the looks of Cary's bench, the defeat wasn't the end of the world. "We produced a real good season, and thatreally meant a lot," seniorguard Karen Koe said. "I accomplished so much in this yearas compared to last. It went well this year. Everything was there. "We went into this game tonight thinking we had an excellent chance of beating them," she add ed. "We went into the lockerroom at the half, saying to each other, •C'mon, don't get down,' and we came back and played a good game. Our attitudes really made the difference this year. It all came down to poise." Poise didmake the difference throughout Cary's postseason play, as displayed by Koe and fellow seniors Cheryl Walejko and Michelle McGreane. Cary's abili ty to stay in control in pressure situations aided in sectional wins over Freeport and Johnsburg. * "We didn't have anything to lose," Celske said. "This got us some good experience, but it was too bad we had to wait this long to play our worst game of the season." "I don't think anyone is really that down right now," said guard McGreane following her best game of the season (10 points). "The fans supported us all the way. It's just too bad we had such a slow first half. "I'm upset thatl have to leave, but we're a close team and I know we'll stay in touch," McGreane added. "This wasn't the best way to end the season." not disclosed. Krause, a native Chicagoan who has worked as a special assign ment scout for the White Sox the last six years, previously worked for the Bulls as director of scouting from 1969 through 1971 and as director of player person nel in 1976. He also was director of scouting for the Los Angeles fakers. Thorn, who served as the Bulls' general manager for the past six years, was released from the club with one year remaining on his contract. He was not immediately available for comment. Reinsdorf, who promised to reorganize the Bulls into a winn ing club when he introduced a new 25-member management team two weeks ago, said the decision to dismiss Thorn was a hard, but essential one. "I really don't want to go into any of the reasons why, other than to say it was a very, very difficult decision. Rod is obviously a class act," Reinsdorf told a news con ference. The Bulls, 34-38, stand to make the playoffs for the first time since 1980-81. But Reinsdorf said he is troubled by the club's failure to 'The world's finest bike since 1899" IT'S TIME FOR BIKING... The Bulls have lost 17 of their last 19 games away from home. After wrapping up his duties with the White Sox, Krause said his top priority would be to prepare for the NBA draft. Saying that no one on the team is "untouchable" in terms of a possible trade, Reinsdorf said several teams have indicated an interest in acquiring Dailey, who has been steeped in controversy since coming to the Bulls from the University of San Francisco, where he pleaded guilty in a sex ual assault case. Krause indicated that Dailey, who has been fined by the Bulls several times for failing to show up for practices and games, would be treated like all the other players on the team. "As I will with every player, I will sit down with every player. I'm not worried about the past," he said. Reinsdorf left open the possibili ty Loughery also would be dismissed. "If we were to make a coaching change, certainly we will not make one before the end of the season," Reinsdorf said.
