The fire reportedly burned for about 90 minutes before brought under control. According to first shift foreman Jim when the fire was first discovered it appeared to be a small one above the office. Illinois Attorney General Neil F. Hartigan has issued an of ficial opinion upholding strict statewide enforcement of an Illinois law prohibiting able bodied persons from using parking spaces reserved for the disabled. In addition, Hartigan's opinion, issued to State Sen. Howard W. Carrol, D-Chicago, upholds uniform statewide application of a $50 fine for any such parking violation. Carroll, a sponsor of the legislation, asked whether the new law pertains to private parking areas that are used by the public and whether home- rule units of local government may impose fines different from that specified by statute. we hit it with a fire extinguisher, it just seemed to take off. f- q 1 Vka1 /1c n lnbc led the fire department at that point," A-i-"0 ^dl AJ.UJLU.O _ real fast and we called Moye said. The fire chief explained there was a furnace in the plant that was temperature-controlled by circulating water. "Because of the structual damage the water supply was cut off to the furnace and we couldn't get to the controls because of the intense heat. There was real danger of the unit overheating and blowing," Kitchen said. In addition to keeping onlookers at a safe distance, Marengo police took the precaution to evacuate nearby homes. The fire was brought under control about 12:30 p.m. However, units of the fire district remained at the scene for several more hours as a precautionary measure. The cause of the blaze, which is under investigation, has not been determined.
