Rt. 31, Suite B Crystal Lake 815/459-9050--9AM TO 7PM Recycling resources can reduce need for landfill "If you have ever wondered why you should bother to recycle," a McHenry County Defender representative said, "consider the problems the county is now facing with land fills. No sooner than one landfill application is turned down, than another company publishes its intent to file such an application. Landfill hearings are expensive for the county. Moreover, landfills require large amounts of land, often cause pollution problems and decrease property values for lands nearby." "What does it have to do with recycling? According to "Wisconsin Natural Resources" magazine, approximately 50 percent of our garbage is paper- largely recyclable. Twenty percent is composed of food and yard wastes-all of which could be composted, a form of recycling. Five percent is made up of metal, glass and plastic, of which only the plastic cannot be recycled. The remaining 15 percent is composed of wood, demolition debris and bulky objects. The wood could often be reused or burned in wood bur ning stoves, and many bulky items such as cars, refrigerators, etc. are often recycled." "Add these all up and the need for landfills could be reduced by about 85 percent," the spokesman said. For those who wish to join the recyclers, the McHenry County Defenders will be holding its next drive this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the parking lot of West Campus, 4724 W. Crystal Lake Road. Items which can be brought to the drive include newspaper with no magazines or junk mail included, glass containers with all metal and plastic removed, "tin" cans which have been rinsed and flattened, used motor oil, aluminum scrap of all kinds, and brown paper bags and cardboard tied in manageable bundles. An aluminum buy-back program is also held for 100 percent aluminum cans. Market prices are paid for the cans with a bonus of 2 cents per pound for crushed cans and an additional 2 cents per pound for lots of more than 100 pounds. On the second Thursday of each month (April 11) another buy-back opportunity is offered in the parking area behind McHenry Quick Oil Change, 4002 W. Elm St., McHenry. Access to the area is made via Borden Street. At this time, from 9 a.m. to noon, you may sell newspapers, glass containers and aluminum cans. JOE M.
