Two seasons ago, the Hurricanes lost 13 of 14 games. Last year, MCC won three Northwest Suburban Conference games and a regional game to finish 4-14. Coach Mike Garvey admits that .500 could be a lofty goal. "That's a big corner to turn. From 4-14 to even think you can go above .500 might be asking a lot, but that's what we're asking from the kids in the program," Garvey said. J And Garvey thinks the {Hurricanes are ready to put the losing seasons in the past. I "The attitude," Garvey said !when asked about the strengths of this year's team. "For the fcirst time since I've been here, . Jthe kids really want to play {baseball. They really want to win. It makes it a lot more fun. I Ireally like baseball. When you Jiave kids who like it too, it just ;kind of makes the season go quicker and, hopefully, it will 'make it go more successfully." The Hurricanes will field an experienced team this spring as five seniors and nine juniors return. "It's a better team than we've had in the past. We've got quite a few kids who saw a lot of playing time last year on the varsity. We should be able to avoid the inexperienced-type mistakes," Garvey said. One of the five seniors ex­ pected to contribute much is pitcher Tom Will. Will, the Hurricanes' No. 1 hurler with three of their four wins in 1984, will again be the team's top pitcher. George Powers also returns to the hill, hoping to shake off shoulder trouble that plagued him last year. Kurt Stevens and Glenn Pecararo round out the staff. "I think it's a pretty well- balanced staff. I'm trying to find one more pitcher, then I want to go with a three-man rotation and have two out of the bullpen, Garvey said he could be asking a lot from Powers. Besides pitching, he is scheduled for short-stop when Will is on the hill and for first when Pecoraro starts. "He had a lot of arm trouble last year. The one game he was really healthy he threw a three- hitter against Lake Zurich. Other than that he was having a lot of trouble with his shoulder. He says it feels better than it has in three years," Garvey said of Powers. "George will be put in a tough spot. Last year, the Hurricanes lacked a stopper out of the bullpen, and that role again concerns Garvey. When the Hurricanes open the season Wednesday at-Harvard, Garvey thinks it will be a better defensive team. "We look better than we have. Last year, we had most of our real good athletes in the outfield. Towards the end of last year, we decided we'd better get them in the infield," Garvey said. Rusty Hopp has the edge at second, while Steves will see duty at first. Will is at short and Pecoraro is slated for third base. "Everybody in there has a good glove. They are smart ballplayers and I think they have strong arms," Garvey said of the infield. The Hurricanes graduated their best hitter from last year, Jeff Kruse, who hit better than.500. Will hit .413 and Tom Snow batted .297. Last season was Will's first as a switch hitter. Other than that, the Hurricanes will field an all- righty lineup. They don't have an left-handed pitcher, both question marks for Garvey. Last season was a rough one for the two new NWSC .teams. Marian Central and Marengo both lost 11 of 14 games, finding it tough to compete against the Class AA schools. "It's tough because so many schools in the conference are so much bigger than we are. Practicing inside does not hurt them as much because they have batting cages and pitching machines," Garvey said. Garvey predicted Grayslake, Marian's NWSC season opener on April 9, and Lake Zurich will battle for the title. He's hoping for a first-division finish.
