Harvard wrestler honored Bv Dick Peterson PUlndeator Herald News Service HARVARD - George Bed- narczyk, Harvard High School's state champion wrestler, has been selected the Class A Illinois Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Harvard becomes the first school in the 14-year history of the program to have two athletes win the honor. Two years ago, another Harvard state wrestling champion, Jeff Putnam, was named the scholar-athlete of the year. Bednarczyk, an outstanding student with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, ended his high school wrestling career with a 64-14-5 record. He was 38-5 this past season, capping it with a dramatic 2-0 win over Elgin St. Edward's Mike Sheehy for the 96-pound state championship. Three of Bednarczyk's losses this season were at the hands of Sheehy, who defeated the Hornet for the regional and sectional championships. Bednarczyk wasn't to be demed, however, in the state finals. With two seconds left in the match, he reversed his St. Ed nemesis for the victory. Bednarczyk is a talented student with a mind for mathematics. He will graduate from high school a year early to study electrical engineering at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.
