APRIL 24.1985 Fertilize trees for optimum growth While most lawns and gardens tend to receive fertilizer ap plications on a regular basis, fertilization of trees is often overlooked. Trees need adequate amounts of nutrients in the soil for normal growth and to fight off pest problems, and just like all other plants, will suffer if these nutrients are not readily available. The EXTENSION) People AAAml Spring and fall are both good times for fertilizing trees. In spring, trees need nutrients for the initial flush of growth. Trees fertilized in fall store some of the nutrients for future use and also", use some for root growth while the rest of the tree is dormant. The one time of the yeaf to always avoid fertilizing trees is late summer, as this can interfer with the process that harden the tree off for winter. phosphorus, and ire the principal Nitrogen, potassium are nutrients to be concerned with when fertilizing trees, although occfifcsionaly there may be a deficiency of other nutrients. For nitrogen, a rate of six pounds per 1,000 square feet is suggested every year or two. Phosphorus and potassium are recommended to be applied about every three years at rates of 3.6 and 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet, respectively. These are general maintenance level guidelines that may vary with soil conditions. There are several methods of applying fertilizers homeowners can use. Surface application, which simply involves spreading the fetilizer on the soil surface beneath the tree, is perhaps the easiest. Nitrogen and potassium will readily move down into the soil applied this way, but phosphorus will not. Limit nitrogen rates to no more than three pounds of actual nitrogen per 1,000 square feet with this type of application. Even at this rate, however, high quality turf will probably be damaged. Thus surface ap plication is best for areas without turf under trees. Apply fertilizers to the entire area under the tree, extending a few feet past the dripline (farthest point branches reach out). It is best to apply half the fertilizer in one direction and the other half at a right angle to get the best coverage. Always water in surface-applied fer tilizers immediately after ap plication. These may be made with a punchbar or a small drill auger (two inche size range). The holes should begin about two feet from the trunk and be arranged in a grid pat tern two to three feet apart, extended past the dripline. Make the holes about 12 to 18 inches deep and at a slight angle, which helps air and water get into the root zone. Add small amounts of fertilizer to each hole so the total amount applied over the area is close to the recommended guideline rates given above. This method requires many holes for a good sized tree, as they should only be two to three feet from another hole in any direction. Many homeowners use commercially available spikes to fertilize trees. This is a variation of the previous method, but generally is much more expensive. Also, Still Sporty Judy's Forty recommended rates usually only call for a few spikes placed far apart for each tree, which leaves very little fertilizer to come in contact with the root system of the tree. Finally, fertilizer may be injected as a liquid into the soil with various types of root feeder equipment. Follow the same type of grid system mentioned above, and make sure the fer tilizer being used will readily go into soluti6n for best results.
