That is why the board unanimously approved three agencies' funding requests for its alcohol and-or substance abuse programs last week. The Department of Alcohol and Substance Abuse (DASA) will now review the appropriation requests. r The three agencies applying for grants are the Youth Service Bureau for $33,000, Family Service and Community-Mental Health Center for $127,731, and The Awakening is .seeking $540,000. The sole recipient of previous drug abuse funding was the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center, which was allocated $191,552 by the board from local taxes and $74,156through DASA during the 1985 fiscal year. Funding is distributed by DAflA annuallyon July 1. - * ! • ! A three-year board plan for alcohol and substance abuse states local programs meet less than eight percent of identifiable county needs. Meeting a minimum of 20 percent of the area needs would begin to bit acceptable, it further states. • The board has established four priorty goals for drug abuse programs: - Provide crisis and acute treatment services. - Provide primary prevention services. - Ensure public safety. « Provide services for severely-impaired individuals. The one goal not currently addressed by any of the three agencies is the third service. Other programs needs identified in the plan are ex panded educational programs, increased outpatient services for adolescents and improved assessment of alcohol abuse. Funding requests attempt to meet the lacking local needs. The Awakening asked for additional dollars to support a student assistance program. The Youth Service Bureau and Family Service sought funding to conduct an assistance program, but also for programs with a different focus. YSB primarily uses family therapy as client treatment and includes a day mode for youths with drug abuse problems. Family Service, in treating youths, uses a disease concept while providing outpatient alcohol services. There may be some overlap between abuse services offered by the three groups if the desired agency funding is awMPwd, but Smith said it would be minimal compared to the gaps identified in the report. Fiesta Days Co-Chairman Sue Low and Fiesta Days Guide Chairman Debbie Cajthaml display Plaindealer Herald photo by Anthony Oliver the 1985 Fiesta Day logo that was created by Christopher Marie Conn ell. The 1985 McHenry Fiesta Days Logo will be on a field of yellow to indicate the sunny skies of the city festival that is the highlights of many McHenry residents, as w«U as guests. The bright blue of the print represents the skies and the waters that surround the scene for every event. Each year the artist attempts to put the feeling of theme symbolically into the logo. Theme Chairmen A1 Smith and Judy Irwin find it a challenge to annually translate the spirit of the theme into artistry that can be transferred onto billboards, posters, place mats, publicity and souvenirs. This year's logo was created by Christopher Connell, and in past years it has been alternately the product of the artistry of A1 Cajthaml and Mike Cajthaml. Chairmen Smith and Irwin welcome area artists to help adopt a logo in future years. Call 385-4300 to indicate interest and availability. By Angela Burden PUtaxteator H«rakl N«w« Service Confirmed cases of the milk- borne salmonella poisoning in McHenry County totalled 255 by the beginning of this week, and are not expected to rise much more, according to local reports. State health officials say that confirmed victims of the epidemic numbered 10,290, with all but 984 in Illinois. All locally-reported cases of salmonella are being in vestigated by the McHenry County Health Department, the department's administrator, Richard Wissell, reported. Department personnel in vestigate the activities of the victim and check on family members, colleagues and other persons who have been in close contact with the confirmed case. "We check on where the victim is «9iployed. And, if the employment is connected with the food industry, the medical profession in contact with persons, day care centers and the like, we inform the person that they can't return to work until two negative stool specimens, 72 hours apart, are examined," Wissell said. He explained the victims' employers are notified to be sure they do not return to work until cleared by the health department. Wissell said that is important to prevent con taminated < persons connected with food stores, restaurants, SALE DATES APRIL 24 THRU APRIL 30 WHILE QUANTITIES LAST CHECKS" ACCEPTED ONLY WITH OUR CHECK PURCHASING CAR MERCHANDISE CLEARANCE CENTER 301W.VIRGINIAAVE.RT.14 CRYSTAL LAKE--455 0333 AND, ROUTE 176, WAUCONDA HOURS: MON.TUES, SAT. 9;5 WED,THURS, FRI.9-8: SUN. 10-3 IASINGCARD ALL WOMEN'S CLOTHING & 50°/c 0 OFF REG. "Our investigations have found that 27 of the confirmed cases in the county are persons in critical occupations," Wissell said. He emphasizes the im portance of good general hygiene and urges persons to thoroughly wash their hands in warm soapy water after use of the bathroom, after handling diapers and after helping youngsters in the bathroom. Although most of the salmonella cases are reported to be in Illinois, victims have also been listed in Wisconsin, In diana, Iowa, Minnesota and Michigan, where officials report one victim transmitted the disease to her baby during birth. Five salmonella-linked deaths have been reported in Illinois. Many more people have taken ill than the official totals show. The counted victims are those who called doctors, and most salmonella victims don't get that sick. The nation's biggest salmonella outbreak on record included only 100 reported cases out of an estimated 16,000 vic tims in California in 1965, said the federal Centers for Disease Control. So, the Illinois outbreak is probably far bigger.
