' Hartigan leads prepared Skyhawks FOX LAKE - It was everything Todd Lewison wanted in a Softball game. And more. . The Johnsburg High softball coach wanted his team primed and fit to take on Grant in a Northwest Suburban Conference battle last Friday. His team was ready - and then some. i • ^ 1 '• The Skyhawks jumped on the Bulldogs in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead, and Grant never recovered, as JHS rolled to an 8-1 victory, and a 5-1 overall record, 2-1 in the NWSC. < "It was the best game we played all year," Lewison said. "No doubt about it." Johnsburg racked up nine hits against Grant, which has one of the fastest pitchers in the conference. "We got on her right away," Lewison said. "We executed well, bunted people around, and just played good softball." Cris May led things off for Johnsburg by reaching on a throwing error. Cindy Swart- zloff then reached on another miscue, a and Lisa Hartigan started off a phenomeonal day with a triple scoring two runs. Patti Butler then singled to right to score Hartigan, and John sburg quickly found itself on top of a 3-0 game. Johnsburg got another run in the second when Hartigan singled to score Deb Linn, who had also singled, and it was 4-0, NWSC Softball JHS. In the third, shortstop Deb Tvaroh singled to lead off. Linda Bartmann reached on a bunt single, and a double by Kelly Quinlan s scored both players. Roberta Kucharski reached on a bunt, stole two bases, and the ever-reliable Hartigan plated her teammate with Johnsburg's final run. For the day, Hartigan had three hits and knocked in four runs. Tvaroh was 2-for-4. "We got great senior leadership from those two," said Lewison. ^ , The Skyhawks also were the recipients of yet another solid outing by sophomore pitcher Swartzlon, who held Grant to just one run on eight hits, while walking just one for the contest. "Their eight hits were scat tered," Lewison said. "Never did they get two hits in a row." Grant threatened to close the gap with runners on second and third and only one out in the fifth, but Hartigan snared a fly ball and threw the Grant runner out at the plate for a nifty double play, ending the threat. "Our outfield was excellent," praised Lewison. "Grant couldn't run on us at all. It was just a great game on our part." Johnsburg will try to extend its conference record Wed nesday, when the Skyhawks will host Grayslake, and Friday, when Wauconda comes to Johnsburg. 3 Lb. Bag Moist Meal CAT FOOD Shurfine 12 Oz. Wirtz and his McHenry girls' softball team split • a doubleheader with Crystal Lake South Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 7-6 before dropping the nightcap 13-8. McHenry then lost to Jacobs 5-0 Monday, leaving McHenry with a 2-5 Fox Valley Conference record, 3-7 overall. "We broke our losing streak," said a relieved Wirtz. The Warriors had lost three straight, all coming at the hands of FVC opponents. "We were down the whole way in the first game," Wirtz said, "but we really hung in and scored three in the sixth to win it." CL South could manage just three hits off starting and winning pitcher Rachel Prushinski, but 10 walks aided the Gator offense. Outstandim McHenry defense thwarte South scoring opportunities throughout the opener. "Our defense was nothin short of spectacular," sai Wirtz. "We made some plays that were just unbelievable." Prushinski helped her own cause by snaring two hard-hit liners. Shortstop Patty Johnson ; Prushinski Offensively, McHenry scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth, but still trailed 6-4 going into the sixth inning. McHenry bunched together a couple hits and a walk. Gretchen Fuiava hit a sacrifice fly which scored a run, and after Cindy Kinsala singled, Melissa Greve boomed a tnple to score Kinsala with the winning run. Greve was 2-for-3 in the game, as was Prushinski, who knocked in a run with a double. Johnson also had two singles, and Fuiava added a double to her totals. In game two, South's Kelly McArdle led the first inning off with a homer, as the Gators scored nine of their 13 runs in the first three innings. McHenry took a 3-2 lead in the second on a Greve RBI double, but South came back with three of its own to take the lead for good. Prushinski tired in the second game and was replaced by Carlson in the third inning. McHenry closed to 9-8 in the fifth, but South scored four in that frame to seal the victory. Greve was again the hitting star, g going 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Monique Be tan- court and Prushinski each had two hits, while Gaines had an RBI single and Fuiava scored two runs. "Greve is really coming on- ^?n&h'lsaid Wirtz. "She had a eat, g great day." FVC Softball victim Monday. "It was real windy, and we're a power- hitting team. I guess that made it tougher for us." Jacobs got three in the first and two in the fifth, as Golden Eagle pitcher Rita Glaze stymied the Warriors on just four hits. "She wasn't that fast," Wirtz said of Glaze's offerings. "Not nearly as fast as Woodstock or Crystal Lake South's pitchers. But we struck out nine times. That's more than in any two games I can remember." Jacobs is a perfect 7-0 and tied for first in the FVC with Woodstock. The Golden Eagles performed their own version of "the hitless wonders," getting only three hits in the gamj, but Jacobs benefitted from six walks by McHenry starting pitcher Prushinski in the first inning. A wild pitch also tossed in gave the hosts a 3-0 edge. Carlson replaced Prushinski in the first. A costly Warrior error, plus a walk, a wild pitch and a single gave Jacobs its final two runs in the fifth. "Chris did a real nice job filling in," said Wirtz. "She only walked four the rest of the way." Betancourt, Prushinski, Greve and Lee Lindquist had the four hits for McHenry, all singles.
