SECTION 2 - PAGi: 17 • PLA11NDEALER-HER ALP. WEDNESDAY . A PHIL 24. Ujg Sports Scott Smith Hurricanes tipped PlalndMtor-Herald News Service WOODSTOCK - One inning - one bad inning - was all it took for Marian Central's softball team as the Hurricanes were nipped by Round Lake, 12-9, in a Northwest Suburban Conference game last Friday. The loss drops MC to 0-4 in the NWSC and 0-5 overall. "We're getting closer," Marian Central Coach Lisa Billman said. "We had a bad second inning where they got five runs and we had four errors. Other than that one inning, we played pretty well." Strom, Smith shine at Schaumburg The McHenry High tennis team, buoyed by a cham pionship from first singles player Gary Strom, finished third in the four-team Schaumburg Invitational Saturday. Strom, a senior, was the first Warrior ever to win a title at the Schaumburg event, the most competitive meet on the Warriors' schedule. Strom defeated Schaumburg's Rob FQrtino in the first round, 6- 3, 6-2, before ripping John Schuser of Morton East 6-2, 6-1. The Warrior then split sets with Glenbard North s Gary Devulaphally, but won the title on the basis of record. The Warriors' 14 points was just behind Glenbard North's 16. The hosts claimed the team title with 23 points. Morton East followed McHenry with six. Sophomore Scott Smith also had a strong tournament, capturing second place at No. 2 singles. Smith blanked Steve Sattler of Morton 6-0,6-0, and then tripped Mike Dokia of Glenbard 6-2,6-2, before losing to Schaumburg's Tim McCauley, 6-2, 6-2. McHenry's Tom Wrona claimed third place at No. 3 singles, as he whitewashed Morton's entry in round one, and then split sets before losing a tie breaker to Rick Garry of Glenbard. Schaumburg's Kevin Mullinay then ended the Warrior junior's day with a 6-2, 6-3 defeat. McHenrv's three doubles teams had & rough go of it. Seniors Randy Weidemann and barely Marian had a couple good innings of its own when it tallied four times in the third and three times in the sixth. In that MC third, Ann Franklin and Michelle Martinez walked and Sandy Newman singled before Colleen Calcagno walked to force in one run. Dona Remke then came through with a two- run single and Heather Welcome plated another run with a single. Smart base running and wildness on the part of Round Lake's pitcher helped the Hurricanes in the sixth. Callahan, Remke and Berna all walked, but Callahan stole third "We've been pleased. One hit later, Marian had its three runs in the frame, but RL scored twice in the fifth and sixth to put the contest away. "We're trying to accentuate the positive aspect of each game and go with it," Billman said. "We've got our toughest week of the season coming up this week." The Hurricanes will travel to Marengo for a NWSC game Wednesday before hosting Lake Zurich in a conference game Friday. Tennis Tom Wynveen topped the Morton East duo of Howard and Davila in a tie-braker, but then fell to Glenbard's Copre and Schude 6-0, 6-0, and Schaum burg's Toenis and Josefowics, 7- 6, 6-0. The Warriors' No. 2 tandem of Tim Gray and Bill Etheridge suffered a worse fate, losing all three of its matches. Mike Bellich and Steve Smith manned the third doubles spot for the locals, and fared a bit better, edging Garcia and Petko of Morton 7-6, 6-4 in round one, before being felled by the Glenbard pair of Wilkerson and Dicastanzo 6-4, 6-1, and Mat- thews-Brokow of Schaumburg, 6-1, 6-0. "It was the first champion for us at this meet," said McHenry coach Gary Gray. "Our singles players really looked good. They're coming around. Our doubles teams, however, are still having problems. We might have to change the lineup soon." Antioch 3, McHenry 2 Gray did indeed alter his lineup for Monday's match at West Campus against Antioch, but the changes resulted in a 3-2 loss to the Sequoits. Strom and Smith came down to reality, both falling 6-4, 6-4 to Pat Bruks and Lonnie Grotz, respectively. Wrona continued his steady play, crushing Eric Hanson 6-2, <rl at No. 3. Weidemann teamed with Gray at first doubles, but the pair didn't fare well, losing a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Wynveen dropped to second Gary Strom doubles, where he and Etheridge rolled over Dave Case and Dale Steiskan, 6-1, 6-1. "Our record is 2-3 now, and could easily be 5-0," lamented Gray. Two of McHenry's three dual losses came by 3-2 margins, while the other, a 4-1 loss to Elgin Larkin, saw several close matches go Larkin's way. McHenry, 1-1 in the Fox Valley Conference, traveled -to Cary-Grove for a league battle with the Trojans Tuesday. The Warriors will entertain Dundee- Crown at Thursday.
