Pag** HI- PI.AIMWALKIMIKR y.l). KHIIIAt . WW 3. l«>8.r If SS check doesn't arrive on time, just wait Q: "My check this month from Social ^Security has been stolen, or maybe it was lost somewhere. Anyhow it didn't come and here I am with no money to livfc on. I phoned SS and reported it and they said a replacement check will be issued to me. But a week has gone by and what happens now? I phoned them again and they were annoyed." --Lenora K. A: Lenora has done everything she can until the new check comes. If she is patient, it could come within 15 days of \ reporting the problem. If the check is found, and a replacement check is issued, she may cash the check, but she must then notify SS that it has been found. In any event, the replacement check must be returned to SS if the original check is found. Here's the way it works: SS will place a "stop payment" order on the check if it is not found. When such an order is placed on a missing check it takes a long time, perhaps 90 --days, for the stop order to become effective. If the check is not lost or stolen j>ut is only misplaced, SS will not make a reussue immediately. They will wait three days. Ifth^ check is stolen or 16st she must be able to give some reason why she believes it is stolen or lost instead of misplaced. When you think of it, the whole system os sending out en- > htlement checks is wonderful. But each month there are thousands * of people who do not receive their checks when due. Now here's a tip to those who are anxious about a lost or stolen check: Don't bother them with too many phone calls about it. The process has started. Sometimes, when a recipient calls SS to ask the whereabouts of a check, the processing may actually be delayed. Give SS a chance. If a call of inquiry is made too soon, the case may have to be pulled out of its normal processing to answer the question. That can result in further delay. Of course Lenora can't spend both checks; th§ new one from SS and the old one, Empathy session set by ACLD The McHenry County Association of Children Will Learning Disabilities (ACLD) will sponsor an "empathy session" on Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the MCC Student lounge. The session will be conducted by Marie Falcone along with Kathy Wilhoit. Mary Manch and Jill McEvoy. It will provide an opportunity to experience the world of the learning disabled first hand. It is hoped that anyone interested, including teachers and parents will at tend. There will be a $1 donation at the door for non-members. She can spend the money from cashing a new check, but she must return the old check to SS if found. The best thing to do would seem to be what I did when my SS was not in the mailbox on the third of June last year. I swallowed my disappointment and waited. Sure enough, it was there the next day. So, be patient and Wait at least three days. We all know what terrible mail service we get, especially those of us who remember the service of 10 years agcTand more. _ Q: "I owe a debt of more than $1,000 to a furniture company. I have been paying them as I promised with my check every month. They endorse the check and cash it. Yet, they started suit against me for full payment in spite of the promise they made to accept the monthly payments. What should I do? I am not experienced and I can't pay it off any way other than what I have been faithfully doing."---Dempsey J. A: Many people who owe money think that a creditor can't sue them if checks for payment are endorsed and cashed. Such is not true in most states. Generally, acceptance by a creditor of an amount legally due him does not, in most cases, mean he cannot sue you anyway. What it does mean is that the creditor, perhaps a collection agency who in most cases are pretty brutal in their collection tactics, ̂ will try to force rapid or accelerated payment by suing. When an account is placed out for collection, so to speak, don't ignore it. The collection agencies have lots of tricks and they all spell bad news for the debtor. » , If you can't reason with them, then ask for help from yourtbeal Council on Aging. They may have a ombudsman who can help you. . Q: "Although there is not Supposed to" be any age discrimination in employment, there certainly is plenty of it. I went to see about a job and the personnel director just as much as told me that I was too old. What do I do about it?"--Minah L. A: Minah is entitled to full information from the company he wants to work for. He can return and apply again and in doing so write down the facts as the personnel director gives them. Is there such a job? Does Minah qualify as to competence and"health? What reasons were given for not hiring him? When Minah has the answers to those questions he can telephone the local office of his congressperson and ask where to report the situation. Then he can, with the help of the elected representative, get at the truth; The ways that personnel directors have for getting around the facts in hiring older people, are subtle and manv. In most cases, the older applicant is up against the system, which is to hire younger people. All you have to do to prove it to yourself is to note the predominance of inexperienced women in, for instance, bank jobs. They are young and pretty, and in most cases pleasant. The banks teach quickly and they do the job expected of them. While an older person might well do better, they are not given the chance. Emphasis is oh youth' and it's just too bad if you nave a fine employment record and know your stuff. That's the way it is and although we can fight it as elders, I don't think we have a chance. Q: "I have been divorced and intend to remarry next month. Do I need to let SS know?"-- Willa B. A: Yes. Tell SS right away. The amount of payments on SS may depend on the information.
