Ipii m vmmmmmm MS Elderly abuse a reality ill county MCC contract talks are 'moving smoothly' By Joe King Plalndealer Herald News Service Contract talks for faculty members at McHenry County College are moving along smoothly, according to negotiators on both sides. "I am extermely satisfied with the negotiations so far," said William Ryan, chief negotiator for . the ad ministration. -> Ryan said the present round of negotiations has taken longer than in past years because both sides have had to take special care to make sure the wording of the contract does not conflict with updated state labor and tenure acts. Despite the protracted • discussions, Trustee Lee Schuppert, another board negotiator, said he thinks an agreement could come soon. "I expect a contract in the foreseeable future," Schuppert said. Stan Lochner, negotiator for the faculty, shared the positive outlook of the college negotiators. "Things are going real well. There is no animosity between the faculty and the btfard, and we are hopeful it will be settled soon," Lochner said. However, one potential hurdle standing in the way of an agreement is the faculty's use of a professional negotiator. At' the outset of negotiations, Carol Chandler, a teacher at the college, was to lead the faculty negotiating team but became ill and could not continue When Chandler became ill, faculty negotiations adviser Curt Hamilton stepped in to keep the process moving and was accepted with no objections from the board. However, at the last MCC Board of Trustees meeting, Ryan said he was uncomfortable dealing with a "professional negotiator" because the talks turned to the issue of salary. At a meeting between the two sides early this week, Ryan asked the faculty negotiators to replace Hamilton with another faculty member for salary discussion. ByMarkBaus n Plalndealer Herald News Service - Nearly four percent of senior citizens in McHenry County suffer some sort of abuse, Lou Ness, director of Turning Point, - said this week. Turning Point is an advocate group that operates a helpline to take reports of domestic violence and abuse, including abuse to senior citizens, Ness said. Another group, Family Alliance Inc., also handles calls through the Stressline and makes an assessment of each reported situation. Ness said that, while less than one percent of the calls to Turning Point are related to elderly abuse, when a call is received the case is reported to Family Alliance and the county Senior Citizens Council. "In the case of senior citizens, we will take a referral from a third party,". Ness said. "If someone calls to report that they think an, elderly person is being we contact Faniily who contacts ti family involved and informs them of services offered in the county." Ness said Turning Point will offer shelter to abused senior citizens ^ho are independent and able to care for themselves. They are currently not equipped to help incapacitated senior citizens. Turning Point does inform the caller who reported the case as to what action was taken, Ness added. Carol Louise, executive director of Family Alliance, said that, when her group gets a report of elderly abuse, they send a counselor to the home or contact the senior citizen directly to let him know wnat options he or she has. The problem they run into, however, is that Family Alliance has no legal right to enter the home, she said. "We have to show good cause (proof of elderly abuse) to get the sheriff to come out to the home," ^Louise said. If the counselor were not allowed in Blood donors . needed for boy Two-year-old Adam Straley of Hebron, who underwent bypass heart surgery as an infant, will undergo open heart surgery June 19 in Presbyterian-St. Luke Hospital in Chicago. The youngster is in urgent need of blood donors to see him through the surgery. Area residents rallied around the family when blood was needed before and persons with B- Positive blood are being asked to donate it for Adam's surgery. : Persons willing to donate blood will have to visit - the Chicago hospital a few days in advance of the scheduled surgery for a check-up and to donate their blood on the day the surgery will take place. "At Jeast we know we tried," she said. * Turning Point operates a local Helpline where they will take reports of elderly abuse at 338- 8080. Family Alliance operates a toll-free stressline, 1-800-892- 8900, that handles similar calls. Illinois does not have a statewide hotline for reports of neglect or physical abuse of the elderly. Carol Cochran, "spokeswoman for the Illinois Department on Aging, said IDA should refer reports of elderly abuse to the local senior citizen councils. "I'm not so sure a statewide hotline is a good idea for reporting abuses," Cochran said. "Elderly people have rights, and I'm afraid we (the state) might be infringing on those rights." Seniors, Cochran contended, are adults and, unless otherwise impaired, can fend for them selves. & Cpchran said - Winnebago, Kankakee and parts of Cook and Perry counties are the only counties affected by an Illinois law that requires the reporting of elderly abuse. 4 Transportation to the hospital will be provided by the family for those who need a ride.
