\ SECTION 2 - PAGE 2 - PLAINDEALER HERALD. FRIDAY . >m 3.1%5 / Business Brake Parts Company lays off 63 By Robert Gordon Plaindealer Herald staff writer Brake Parts Company, 1600 N. Industrial Road, McHenry, laid off 63 hourly employees over a two-week period that began in the beginning of April, ac cording to Brake Parts District Manager Charles Neugebauer. According to Neugebauer.it is the first time in the company's 18 % year history that it has been forced to lay off employees. After a ,very busy and prosperous, fall and winter season, Brake Parts Company customers' orders tapered off in the spring, leaving the company with more jobs than work, ac cording to Brake Parts Em ployee Relations Manager Vince Rotello. "They (Brake Parts customers) tought all of these parts from us (in the fall), and they anticipated their business to go on real weM." Rotello said. "But it ended up they had more stock on the shelf than they needed and did not order more fremus." 1 NeUgebauer said that the mildness of this past, winter is the mam reason automotive distributors and jobbers (sources where filling stations get their parts) built up a sur plus in inventory. However, Neugebauer also pointed out that some changes in this country's economy have lowered the demand for automotive replacement parts. "Sales of new U.S. made automobiles have been in creasing over the past three years, Neugebauer said. "(Sales rose) from 5.£ million to 8 million last year and 1985 is projected to be 8.5 million. And it's a known fact that when people are buying new cars, they have less tendency for repairing the cars they are going to trade inr "Also the U.S. has ex perienced a very strong dollar in the international market which has resulted in more foreign-made automotive replacement parts being im ported into this country." However, the company's "soft sales" may be picking up soon. According ' to Neugebauer, Brake Parts Company "ex perienced . increased orders in one of our product lines." He said this increase will be "enough to start to slowly call back people, effective the week of May 6." "We have high hopes that by the end of summer we will have brought back all the employees we laid off," Neugebauer said. Brake Parts Company has approximately employees. 550 hourly • v Illinois Bell adds late charge to modernize Illinois Bell customers who pay their telephone bills late will be chars use phone directories will continue to be exempt from charged an additional fee, directory assistance charges, effective this month. The order will increase company revenues by $47 million annually. The new 1.5 percent late payment charge is part of a recent Illinois Commerce Commission order granting Illinois Bell's request for ad ditional revenue to replace and modernize equipment. "Annually, nearly $1.5 billion in payments are received after the due date," said Fred K. Konrad, Illinois Bell assistant vice-president. "It costs all Illinois Bell customers when we extend credit at no ^hai]ge to those who don't pay on time." Alsp approved were changes in directory assistance charges and increases in some service connection charges. "Most residence customers who pay their bill on time won't see an increase ih their monthly bill," Konrad said. "That's because most of the increases are for optional services that are priced below our cost. Basic local rates and calling charges will remain unchanged." The two-call directory assistance allowance for ^business and residence customers will be eliminated. However, charges for calls to directory assistance will remain 30 cents each. Persons making calls from hospitals and hotels will begin paying directory assistance charges. Disabled and blind customers unable to Business briefs 20 YEARS SERVICE Wonder Lake residents Richard A. Gradt and Donald R. •'Hammond were recently honored by General Telephone Company, their employer, for 20 years of service. FLYERS FOR MISSING^ > Flyers that feature the photographs of four missing children and safety tips for parents and children, will be available free of charge to all K mart customers in displays at K mart stores. They will also be inserted , into each photo processing order handled by the company's stores. The program was proposed by Guardian Industries Photo Division, a supplier of photo processing to K mart. vice," Konrad said. "Since approximately 90 percent of directory assistance calls are for numbers listed in the directory, most customers can avoid the charge." "Although we have nlbt seen the official order, our proposal calls for an increase in establishing residence telephone service from $44.50 to $55. This charge for business customers would increase to $84.50 from $70.50. "The company also proposed to increase the monthly charge for call waiting service to $3 from $2.52, and to increase speed call 30 service to $5 from $4.85." The company requested the revenues in November, 1984 to cover increased depreciation expenses that recognize the replacement of existing equipment with newer technology. HAND FED BABY BIRDS ARE HERE!
