/ SECTION 2 - PAGE 16- PLAINDEALER-HKRALD. FRIDAY . M\\ 3.1<>83 Sports --i Rick Bell PSA Professional Golfer's excuses are The arguments on the first tee for more strokes are almost unbelievable. 'My elbow hurts', 'I didn't get any sleep last night' and 'I of the more common. new (or someone last night' are always good, reliable standbys in the quest for stroke adjustment to gain an advantage over an opponent. For those you whft are new to the gawrtfo^-golf, what we are talking about here is the handicap system. The USGA (United States Golf Association) defines handicap: "A h handicap is the number of artificial strokes a player receives to adjust his or her scoring ability to the common level of scratch or zero-handicap golf." Roughly, a player with a 10-handicap will typically shoot 10 over par on any given day. There are days, however, when he shoot 20 over par, and in the USGA's system, these fluke scores are allowed for when computing the handicap. No one shoots 82 But th€ playc Assuming honesty, handicapping is the great equalizer among every time on the course for if all of a ese flukes can only be allowed er's scores are recorded." isty, handicapping is the golfers of differing abilities. It's not a perfect system, but the USGA system is better than the one based on some of the ex cuses I've heard at 8:09 on a Sunday morning. i -- Next week: Letting out the shaft. i • SPORTS LOG Warrior boosters meet The final meeting of the 1984-85 year for the McIJeni7 Warrior Booster Club will be held Tuesday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the West Campus teacher's lounge. * Installation of officers for the new school year will take place at this time. I YOU DIDN'T KNOW Brought to you by Phil Oeftling Amazingly, a , college basketball team with only 5 players on the entire roster (no substitutes) once won a game in the NCAA tournament for the national cham pionship! .It happened in 1953...Little Lebanon Valley (Pa.) College beat Ford- ham in the first round of the NCAA tournament despite having no one on the bench...They had a 7 man squad, but 2 players were ruled ineligible be fore the game, so Lebanon Valley made basketbalLhistory.
