Sl.CTUA 2 • I'AKK 19- F R I D A Y , MA> 3.1985 Sports * Warrior girls at conference McHenry's girls' track team is set to go to Algonquin Friday night, where the Warriors will participate in the Fox Valley Con ference meet at Jacobs High School, beginning at 3:30 p.m. McHenry will then take part in the sectional meet next Friday and Saturday, time and place yet to be announced. . V Sox win puts his head way up high Coach Pat WirtzJs girls' softball team at McHenry has finally found its bats, shoes, gloves, etc. Pounding out 68 in four games, the Warriors are really on a tear in the Fox Valley. Beginning with a 4-3 win over Jacobs, giving the Golden Eagles their first defeat of the season, the Warriors responded with wins of 28-7 and 12-9 over Crystal Lake Central in a doubleheader last Saturday, and 24-12 over Dundee-Crown Monday. After watching tne girls wallop four homers in the third inning Monday to grab a 13-1 lead, I retired to an easy chair to watch the 'good guys' beat the 'bad guys' in the Crosstown Classic. Not only did our Warriors win easily, but SIH and I can hold our heads high in McHenry for at least another year after our White Sox were triumphant. Back to the Lady Warriors. They really pounded D-C pitching, and although McHenry is in fourth place in the Fox Valley, if the girls can continue die hitting and fielding they displayed Monday night, they could be a team to reckon with in the FVC race this season. The 20th Annual McHenry Relays were, as usual, a great success. Despite the cool, windy weather, meet officials Joe Schlender and Dan Boland had the meet so organized, it finished about 40 minutes ahead of schedule. . However, to a coOple of old friends, Wally Coari and Earle Cooper: Wh&re are you when we need you? The two gents - formei; caretakers of the outdoor facilities at McCracken Field - would be embarrassed at the conditions of the field today. The baseball diamonds are no more than sandlot fields. Ruts, high grass, no extra dirt on the infield, bleachers that are dangerous to sit in because of broken boards - all those factors contribute to the shoddy nature of the field. The cinder track, where times in the running events could no more qualify a boy for the state meet than the man on the moon, is also in terrible shape. It's time for the high school officials to take a good look at McHenry's McCracken Field, and to come to some kind of a decision. Either eliminate track and baseball from the program, or do something about the outdoor facilities. Coach Mike Shanahan's water polo squad will be playing in Ihe state finals this weekend in Palatine. The Water Warriors had a very tough schedule, playing teams like New Trier and Hinsdale Central, both state powers in the pool. Todd Trocki leads the Warriors in scoring with 58 _ followed by Dana Pitel with 28 and Guy Petty with 23. Other boys contributing to the program are: Frank Patterson, Brian Etten, Joe Raycraft, Jim Owens, Barry Seavy, Brian Foley and Joel Pogose. On the Sideline Dick Rabbijtt Warrior fans are wishing them well at this weekend's state meet. ' V Brian Wilson's baseball Warriors are really struggling these days. They dropped a twin-bill to Crystal Lake Central over the weekend, but fortunately bounced back to beat Jerry Curtright's Dundee-Crown club, 4-3 in nine innings Tuesday. The Warriors were at D-C Thursday. According to CUrtright, the Chargers are ready to make a move in the FVC, provided they could get by the hard-hitting Warriors. One thing about Jerry Curtright - he is an honest man in his evaluation of the Chargers' opponents - and he does fear the Warriors. Thegirls' track team really took it on the chin at Cary-Grove* on Monday. Tracey Hoffman in the 800 and Toni Rich in the 220 ' were the only winners for the Warriors. The boy tracksters of Dan Boland rebounded from a seventh place finish in the McHenry Relays to defeat Jacobs in a dual meet Monday. They will travel to McHenry Relays champion Hoffman Estates for a meet Saturday. Gary Gray's tennis squad was whitewashed by the sensational Gators of Crystal Lake South and coach Don Nead Tuesday, 5-0. CL Central was on tap for the Warriors Thursday, and next week the Fox Valley tourney at Dundee-Crown is scheduled. JD-Cgets revenge, buries Warriors ^ CARPENTERSVILLE - The impressive play of McHenry's giris' softbail team is now but a distant memory, after Dundee- Crown handed the Warriors a humiliating 21-11 loss Wed- tBhesday afternoon. The Chargers, whom McHenry had thrashed 24-12 just two days prior, scored 14 runs in the third inning and routed the locals, breaking a three-game Warrior win streak. McHenry had been on a hitting spree, scoring 64 runs in the three wins. The hits still came Wednesday, but the pitching didn't. Starter and loser Chris CacAsQJi. walked 11 Charger batlers^i^Ntwo-and-two-thirds innings, ana Rachel Prushinski wa&ed\six more in relief. Two more free passes were issued by FVC Softball Michelle Stripoli, putting" a whopping 19 D-C runners on base via the base on balls. "That's the story," said a disappointed McHenry coach Pat Wirtz. "And it's too bad, too." The Warriors raced out to a big early lead by scoring six in the first. D-C came back with three in the bottom of the frame, but the hot-hitting Warriors got a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings to take a commanding 10-3 lead going into the bottom of the third. But D-C exploded for the 14 runs in that stanza, aided by six Warrior walks. The Chargers re n now 3-9 in the Fox Valley inference. McHenry slipped to r6-6. "We're still hitting," said Wirtz, looking on the bright side. "I have more top hitters this year than I ever nave before." Prushinski and catcher Cindy Gauies led the onslaught Wednesday with three hits and three RBI apiece. Each included a double in their totals. Stripoli added three singles, and Gretchen Fuiava and Lee Lindquist two each. Lindquist had two RBI. The Warriors- outhit D-C J.5-10. "Rachel continues to smack the heck out of the ball," said Wirtz of his sophomore slugger. "And Cindy Gaines really played well, a good all-around game."
