AND HE'S FULLY CLOTHED - Most TV viewers under the age of 30 think of Joe DiMaggio as a coffee-machine salesman, not as an all-time-great New York Yankees outfielder. That's not going to happen to former three-time Cy Young Award winner and Baltimore star pitcher, J»m Palmer. While Palmer's very big in selling under wear on TV these days, he's making an attempt to keep his connection with sports. His TV show. "The Sporting Life." is presently in the middle of a 10-week run on the Public Broad casting Service. The half-hour show will have the longest run of any sports show on PBS. . Well, it's not really a sports show as we know them, and there will be no "let's go to the videotapes." While it may not attract the six-pack crowd, it plight make it with the wine-and-quiche boys and ^girls. (Did he say Yuppies?) The show is a weekly peek at the world of ath- Idtes including such stars as jockey Angel Cordero and basketball's Nancy Lieberman. This may seem like tame stuff, so viewers will also see one on Washington Redskins' defensive lineman. George Starke, and you can't get much more macho than that. Conceived by two women, "The Sporting Life" is aimed more at people whose interest in sports lie in preparation and the psychology of athletes than the final score; people whose sports experience is limit ed to mdrning jogging and weekend tennis. The women. Roberta London and Phyllis Behar, • whose company, Foxwood Productions, co-pro- duces the show with WNET, got the idea over 18 months ago and it's taken that long to sell the idea. Mrs. London admits she's a fan of sports people. "I think," she says, "the public wants to see the less obvious side of things." Mrs. Behar "thinks the show is for people who don't watch too much sports. We wanted to take time to understand the athletes." Public Broadcasting did, however, make one concession to the sixrpack crowd. It qhanged the show's original name. It was "The Roi Sports." @1985 Compu*og Romance of SUNDAY. The band's new clip, "Welcome to the Pleasure Dome," opens with some boys stealing a car outside a nightclub from which -- guess what? -- "Relax" is blaring. The next sequence resembles the road-hogs scene from "A Clockwork Orange," and the finale looks like a combination of several Fellini films mixed with some old "Relax" clips. This band's creativity seems to be diminishing as its budgets expand. Gone too far? One of the freshest clips on MTV these days is the new Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers video "Don't Come Around Here No More." Tom plays a convincing Mad Hatter in an op-art wonderland. But the fun ends on a sour note when Tom. and the band turn Alice into dessert, and Tom gobbles her up. Sex and violence is one thing, but cannibalism? Still the same * John Fogerty's new clip, "Rock and Roll Girls," is a no-nonsense studio performance. It starts out in black and white, Imply ing old footage, and s^wly. turns to citaf. Fogerty wears the flannel shirt an$l p • Krt|p̂ ™ HI Mf Blfe John Foaarty jeans he donned in his Creedence Clearwater Revival days, and he gets his message -- that things may have changed a bit, but his music is basically the same -- across quite nicely. Different worlds "Voices Carry," the first video from 'Till Tuesday, captures the spirit of a doomed relationship. (He's a stuffed shirt; she's a free- spirited rock 'n' roll girl.) If you've ever dreamed of shouting out against high culture, you'll love the finale, in which our heroine, in defiance of her nervous boyfriend and the • stuffed shirts in a concert hall, sings out -- loudly. * Aroand the dial On Saturday night (May 11), MTV will unleash two hot-rocking bands -- Los Lobos and the Blasters. They were recorded live at New Yorta Ritz last April. £Dp»$oncwt is.worth stay- ilig home to catch. ©1*** Cowpulog
