Senior Mike Lobinsky was the only champion for McHenry, topping the field in the discus with a toss of 133'. "That's not his best throw," said Boland, "but he won it. All the kids seemed to have trouble with the (discus) ring there. He was seeded second going in." By Christine Wood Plaindealer-Herald News Service CRYSTAL LAKE - Nearly everyone remember the thrill of learning to ride a bike, or the excitement of owning one. But most people, as soon as the/are old enough to drive a car, exile their bicycles to the back corner of the garage. Not so the members of the McHenry County Bicycle Clii0, who ride for both exercise and enjoyment. "Our purpose is very general and • wide-open," said club president Scott Offord. "It's to promote bicycling in McHenry County." The club tries to provide something for every type of rider, from, those who enjoy racing or long-distance riding, to those who prefer easy-going, short distance excursions. "We sponsor all kinds of bicycling events," said Offord. "Our main events are our weekly rides, which are generally from 5 to 20 miles in length. "That's basically for casual riders, people just interested in having a good time. All of our rides are fun, but they all have a clever twist to them. We have historical rides, scenic rides, pizza rides, ice cream rides and Sunday brunch rides." "Most bicyclists would like to avoid hills as much as possible," said Offord, "but we have one fellow who likes them. He has a 100-mile ride that hits every major hill in McHenry County. According to Offord, one of the' best things about group riding is setting your own pace. "Often," he said, "there are couples in the club. The guy wants to go out and ride like a maniac, but his. wife can't keep up with him. If they're with a group, all the maniacs take off and get to the ice cream parlor (or wherever) in 10 minutes, and everyone else rides together and has someone to talk to." Many of the longer treks are followed by a "sag wagon," a van or truck that carries water, and, if necessary, tired bicyclists and their bikes. Major invitational rides draw 'Bicyclists from all over the country. The Udder Century is a 100-mile ride that ends up at the Harvard Milk Day Festival. Double Trouble is a timed ride of nearly 400 miles. The club also sponsors bicycle repair and maintenance clinics. The club, which meets the second Friday of every month at McHenry County College, also has a newsletter to keep members informed of coming events. For more information, write: MCBC, P*.0. Warriors pound Cary McHenry finishes in basement at FVC Meet ALGONQUIN - Dan Boland couldn't ask for any more. So he won't. The McHenry High girls' track coach watched his Warriors finish last at the Fox Valley Conference meet at Jacobs Friday, but it's really worse than it sounds. Really. "We had a couple girls in jured, and they couldn't run which really nurt our relay teams," said Boland. "Almost everyone on the team had rsonal bests Friday. I was ping we could catch Central (Crystal Lake) and get out of the basement, but not quite." CL South won the meet with 112, while Cary-Grove was second with 97. McHenry's 24 trailed sixth-place Central by 13. "We did pretty much as I expected. Lisa Lucarz got hurt and couldn't run in anything. That hurt our times," Boland said. The top finisher for McHenry was freshman Tracey Hoffman, pe hoi FVC Girls' Track who was second in the 800 run. "She just did a super job," said her coach. It was her personal best by a long shot." Selina John grabbed a third in the 400 dash, little more than one second off the winning time. The Warriors' mile relay team finished third, eight seconds better than its previous top time. McHenry's 400 meter relay unit was fifth, while the 800 medley relay unit was sixth. The Warriors will be at the 14- team Dundee-Crown Sectional Meet this Friday and Saturday, and Boland said he has outside hopes of some of his team members advancing to state. "Realistically, I would say that Tracey Hoffman and Selina John have an outside chance. Our m mile relay team might have a chance, too. But they'd have to improve their time to do it," Boland said.
