~~l ~e- Museum expert surveys county museum Recently the McHenry County Historical Museum in Union was surveyed by Dr. Walter S. Dunn, Jr., director of the National Transportation Museum in St. Louis, Mo. His visit came as a result of a Museum Assessment Planning Grant awarded to the society by the Institute of Museum Services. Congress established the agency to encourage and assist museums in modernizing their methods and facilities so that they might be better able to Dr. Walter Dunn, muesum planner, discusses aspects of the McHenry County Historical Society with President Mrs. Irene Borre of Richmond. Dunn recently visited the museum as the result of an assessment planning grant. conserve cultural, historic and scientific heritage. Last summer the McHenry County Historical Society was informed that it was to be a recipient of the professional consultant services. Meeting with society board members and the museum curator, Dr. Dunn examined operations in terms of organizational structure, finances, buildings and grounds, collections, conservation, exhibitions, programs, and membership and community support. The results of the professional analysis will aid the society in planning both short range and long range goals. . In other museum-related activities, renovation work continues at the museum in Union on front entryway im­ provements and on lighting in the three upstairs exhibit rooms. Besides upgrading the lights, UV filters are being added to eliminate the harmful emission of ultraviolet light on the museum collections. The work was scheduled to be completed by the beginning of May when the museum opened to the public. Forms are being distributed .to county schools and may be obtained by writing Tammeus at P.O. Box 484, Woodstock. "The Talent Contest has become a summertime activity of fun and a chance to make new friends," Tammeus observed as he recalled the growth of the popular sfttraction since he orginated it more than 20 years ago. Competition is divided into three age groups: Junior, age 14 or under on Nov. 30, 1985; Senior, age 15 to 20 on Nov. 30, 1985; and Adult, age 21 or over. Auditions will be held on Sun­ day, July 28, at Hansen Pavilion on the fairgrounds at Wood­ stock. • Finalists will compete in Hansen Pavilion on Friday evening August 2. Cash prizes of $100 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third are offered in all three divisions.
