Texas (CBS) NBA BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS (ABC) WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS (ABC) THE PREAKNESS STAKES I ive from Pimlico Race Course. Baltimore. Md.- MAKING AMENDS -- Next Saturday afternoon (May 18) on ABC's "Wide World of Sports." four- time Olympic gold-medal-winner Carl Lewis will try to break Bob Beamon's 17-year-old world record of 29 feet. 2 1/2 inches in the long jump at the UCLA Invitational Track and Field Meet in Drake Stadium in Los Angeles -c In last summer's Olympic Games. Lewis decided not to try for the long-jump record -- stopping after two of the six permitted tries -- to save his energy for other events This proved a big letdown for the fans, and ABC didn't help things later, when Lewis -- tying the late Jesse Owens for most medals won by a track and field athlete -- was going for his fourth gold medal. Instead of a live showing of the 400-meter relay race in which Lewis was the U.S. anchor man, the network presented another event and viewers had to settle for the historic win on tape a few minutes later Both Lewis and ABC hope to make up for the oversights on Saturday. Lewis will attempt to break the long-jump retord. while the network will televise the entire meet, following Lewis every time he races down the runway. "I'm going to try my best." says Lewis."to exceed my own record of 28 feet. 10 1/4 inches, and hopefully achieve my goal of jumping over 29 feet Under the right conditions. 30 feet is not impossible." One thing Lewis likes about the meet is Drake Stadium's long-jump pit. "It is one of the best in the world because the runway is last enough to accom modate a fasl approach. Last year." he went on. "I had to prepare lor lour events at the Games rather than concentrate-on any one event. This yeqr I plan to focus on the long |ump." Owens' world record in 1933 was 26 leet. 8 1/4 inches. It had only progressed 8 1/2 inches in 32 years, when on Oct 18. 1968. Beamon in seconds added almost 2 leet to the record. He reached the 28-foot mark in the 1980 Olympics. What are Beamon's thoughts on Lewis's try? "I believe Cart has the ability to break the record." he said recently. "The time is« right because he is at his peak, and he's the most logical candidate to surpass my performance Obviously I hope the record will not be broken, but if it is. the combination of Carl's great talent, energy and his vivacious personality will make him a most deserv ing champion" (c) 190S Compulog SUNDAY. VIDEO GCCNC The 10 best videos now playing By Barton Waits Our picks It's once again time to select our top 10 from the current crop of videos. They are: Tears for Fears, "Every body Wants to Rule the World" 'Time Zone, "World Destruction" Tom Petty Heart- breakers. "Don't You Come Around Here No More" Power Station, "Some Like It Hot" Depeche Mode, "People Are People" •' David Sanborn, "Love and Happiness" Kaja, "Turn Your Back on Me" Sade, "Smooth Opera tor" The Smiths. "How Soon Is Now?" 'Till Tuesday, "Voices Carry." Very symbolic Kaja's "Turn Your Back on Me" has the op art look that seems to be popular these days. It's also big on junior-high-school symbol ism. Several key images -- snakes, people with their heads wrapped, people dressed like chickens and pigs, and trains going through doors -- are repeated again and again. One would like to think these images have a pro found meaning, but I'm afraid Kaja simply has too many images *and not enough ideas. Graham Parker Parker returns "Wake Up (Next to You)," from Graham Par ker and the Shot, has a "Twilight Zone"-type hook. Parker walks around an apartment filled with fro zen images, singing about a former relationship. The still images are beautifully complemented by Parker's movements and by the tracking of the camera. Unfortunately, the highlight, a beautiful tracking shot of a saxo phone, has nothing to do with the rest of video. TV tunes Tonight. May 12, MTV will present '"Return to Waterloo'-a Rock'n'Roll Roundtable." It's a candid discussion of the new film by Ray Davies of the Kinks and of what works and what doesn't work when movies and music are mixed. " c 1985 Compulog
