Reichardt John Dewey-Carter, who plays hard-working Grant Todd on "Another World." is one of daytime's most distinguished actors He also has one of daytime's most varied backgrounds Dewey-Carter, who was born in Memphis. Tenn . and raised in Detroit, was one of the original "Quiz Kids" on that well-remem­ bered radio show In high school, he sang with an all- city glee club and was active in sports. He also found time to work as a disc jockey (he had his own weekly radio show while still in high school) and has been writing poet­ ry and short stories since his high school years. He graduated from Ihe Detroit Institute of Technol­ ogy and served in the Naval Reserve in Vietnam, where he was decorated for his service as a gunner on river patrol boats and w.-is named outstanding service­ man while he was serving in Saigon, where he taught English to Vietnamese offi­ cers. But. he recalls. "I came home disillusioned and disappointed " * It was a chance meeting with a group of Detroit the­ ater actors, who encour­ aged him to audition tor a role in a theatrical produc­ tion, that turned Dewey- Carter in the direction of John Dewey Carter "Arother World's" Bay City. "I only began to consider acting as a professional career after serving in Vietnam." he says "I really wanted to write and direct, but I auditioned lor and got the lead role in a play, and from then on I was hooked " Dewey-Carter amassed some impressive theater credits in Detroit, then moved to Los Angeles, where he spent nine years before he |0ined the cast of "Another World " In Hollywood. Dewey- Carter landed roles on many nighttime television series, including Rich Man. Poor Man." "Biomc Woprian." "Hill Street Blues" and "Falcon Crest " His film roles include "To Kill a Cop."
